De Yot, Arthur V., 90, of Upper Yoder Twp., died June 26, 2009, at Laurel Wood Care Center. Born in Buffalo, NY, on August 20, 1918, son of Joseph F. and Mabel J. (Leslie) De Yot.  Preceded in death by parents; infant son, John Patrick; son, David J., who died June 19, 2009; and brother, Leslie.   Survived by loving wife of 69 years, Betty (Gaver) De Yot; children, Thomas, married to Kathie (Madden), St. Louis, MO; Aline, married to David Fracassi, Erie, PA; and Becky Babik, Chris and Mike Goch, Melinda Nitch, Beverly and Craig Mlaker, Maryann Corbaci, Kristina and Denny Kelly, all of Johnstown; and David Corbaci, Arizona.  Also survived by 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Arthur served as a Major in the Army Air Corp as a B-24 pilot during the European Theater, World War II. He retired as Plant Manager for SCM/Glidden.  He was a previous Board Member of Birthright, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and St. Rochus Catholic Church, where Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM, Tuesday, June 30, Rev. Charles M. Amershek, Jr.

Born July 17, 1926, in Johnstown, daughter of Matteo and Maria (Cappela) Patti.  Preceded in death by husband, Wilbert F. Killian; parents; and brothers, John and Joseph Patti. Survived by sons, Dennis J., married to Miriam (Figueroa) Killian, Annapolis, MD, and Alan M., and fiancee, Rosemary Palusko, Johnstown; sisters, Rose Frangie, Jacksonville, FL, and Constance Torchia, Johnstown; grandchildren, Carrie, married to Timothy Maurer; Shawn; Michael; Eric, married to Deanna (Roberts); and Jason Killian, married to Tiffany; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Kist, Jessica and Casey Adeline Maurer and Maci, Ella, and Bryanne Killian.  Former owner of Killian's Market, Hornerstown. Born in Vineland, NJ on April 1, 1950, daughter of William and Lydia (Jeske) Glanding.  Preceded in death by parents and infant brother.  Survived by loving husband, John Piazza; children, Brian, married to Melissa, Arizona; John; and Wesley, married to Alyssa, Bethlehem, PA; 6 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. Sosinski, Katherine, 81, of Sandy Spring, MD, formerly of Westmont, died June 10, 2009 at Brook Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, MD. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on November 18, 1927, the daughter of James R. and Elizabeth (Butler) Burns.  Preceded in death by parents; husband, Henry L. Sosinski, who died December 1, 2001; infant son, Eric Paul; brothers, Edward, James, Lawrence, and Thomas; and sister, E. Regina.  Survived by children, Timothy, married to Ellen (Ossip), Clarksville, MD; Henry, married to Patricia (Foster), Columbia, MD; grandchildren, Erynn Sosinski and Jennifer Rubin; brother, Robert Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews.   Katherine was a retired Teacher from Westmont Hilltop Elementary School where she taught second grade for 22 years..  She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, Johnstown, where Funeral Mass will be celebrated, 10 AM, Tuesday, June 16, 2009, Rev. William E. Rosenbaum.

77, Valparaiso, IN, formerly of Johnstown, died June 9, 2009 at Porter Hospital, Valparaiso, IN. Born in Johnstown, PA, on July 19, 1931, the daughter of Anthony and Carrie (Sokolowski) Furman.  Preceded in death by parents; husband, Bernard F. Karcher, who died in 1987; brother, Eddie; and sisters, Patricia, Helen, and Janie.  Survived by daughter, Mary Ann, married to Andrew Ellis, Fairmont, IN; sons, Dennis J., married to Cindy, Tulsa, OK; Michael R., married to Beth, Virginia Beach, VA; James P., married to Margaret, Bellingham, WA; Thomas A., married to Angela, Valparaiso, IN; and William E., married to Lisa, Valparaiso, IN. Also survived by 14 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and sister, Martha Martich, Sedro Woolley, WA.  Toni was a retired nurse, working for Porter Memorial Hospital as Head Nurse in the Intensive Coronary Care Unit from 1973 to 1978, then working for Dr. Chas. Griffin from 1978 to 1987. She was also a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Valparaiso.

Santoyo, Alexander Michael, 54, Valparaiso, Indiana, formerly of Johnstown, died June 6, 2009. Born September 9, 1954, in Johnstown, the son of Jesus and Maria (Santana) Santoyo.  Preceded in death by parents; stepfather, Savas Ojeda; sister, Carolina Santoyo; and two brothers-in-law, Joe Burgo and Edward Rock.  Survived by loving wife of more than 35 years, Deborah (Rock); sons, Eric Santoyo, married to Jaime; and Scott Santoyo, married to Ann, both of Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Cruz Nicholas Santoyo and Ava Madison Santoyo. Also survived by these brothers and sisters: Nicholas Santoyo, married to Cesa; Jesus Santoyo, married to Becky; Joseph Ojeda; and Sara Burgo, all of Johnstown; Bridget McClarren; Rita, married to Charles Knoll; Maria, married to Alvin Hritz; and Rebecca Santoyo, all of Florida; Lupe Santoyo of Virginia Beach, VA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank Rok, married to Irene; Ben Troy, married to Barbara; Ann Rock; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.  A Bishop McCort Hill School graduate, he served with the U.S. Naval Reserves and received B.S. degrees from Indiana Wesleyan University and Ivy Tech College in Drafting and Business Administration as part of his lifelong zeal for education. Alex was currently a Maintenance Foreman with U.S. Steel Gary Works where he had been since 2005 following a 29 year career with Bethlehem Steel. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul Men's Club, was a Third Degree Knights of Columbus, member of Elks B.P.O.E. Lodge 500, and the Sons of the American Legion Post 170, all of Indiana.  Alex was an energetic and honorable man with a zest for life. He would be the first to join in song or rise to the dance floor in life's little celebrations. At home he was the master of creative design, and a model to his family for hard work, diligence and generosity. In his brief moments of leisure he could be found cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State football teams.

Harries, Thomas Edward, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Presbyterian Home of greater Johnstown. Cause of death was cardiac arrhythmia.
He was born on May 14, 1935, at the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital to Virginia Louise Klink Harries and Thomas William Harries, both deceased.  He graduated from Westmont Upper Yoder Consolidated High School. He earned a BS degree in Psychology in 1964 and a Masters Degree in Applied Communication in 1966, both from the Ohio State University. He earned his PhD in Applied Communication and Instructional Design from Michigan State University in 1972.
Dr Harries retired in 2000 after 21 years of service in the Veterans Health Administration. Three decades were devoted to exploring the relationship of Metaphysics, Theosophy, Gnostic Christian beliefs and practices and General Systems Theory. Dr. Harries developed Outrageous Truth: A Mystical Paradigm (OT-MP), an integrated scientific and Spiritual system of thought.  This work can currently be found on the internet at: http://www.ot-mp.net/   A full Curriculum Vita (Resume) for Dr.  Harries' life's work is located at: http://www.ot-mp.net/resume.html   Dr Harries is survived by his first wife, Cynthia Harris Geary, formerly of Westmont, and daughters, Deborah Harries-Church of Richmond, Indiana, with two grandchildren Sarah Swank of Phoenix, Arizona and Audrey Strange of Columbus, Ohio; and Diana Harries Fuller of Pickerington, Ohio with two grandchildren, Jillian Fuller Prior of Newark, Ohio, and Kaitlin Fuller of Columbus, Ohio.  He is survived by his second wife, Nancy Belck of Indianapolis, Indiana and Partner Imperatrice Bonilla and their daughter Vanessa Harries De Lopez of Zepherhills, Florida and two grandsons, Sevastian and Lucas-Reese.  Also surviving are sisters, Suzanne Faye Harries, of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania and Audrey O'Kelley Fahlgren, of Pasadena, California.

Miller, Jacqueline M. (Basile), Upper Yoder Township, died May 30, 2009 in Johnstown. She was born in Johnstown on November 24, 1941, daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Shorto) Basile.   Survived by these children: Roxanne Resanowitch, Edisto Island, S.C.; Andrew, married to Eileen, Linden, N.J.; and James Miller, SC; and three grandchildren, Andrew Jr., Matthew, and Casey Miller.  Sister of Joseph and Sandra Basile of Johnstown; also numerous nieces and nephews.  Employed by General Motors Corp. in New Jersey. She was a member of Joseph Johns Lodge ISDA 214 and St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Maple Avenue, Johnstown, where Funeral Mass will be held 10 AM, Wedsnesday, June 3, 2009.

Truscello, Dorothy L., 86, of Johnstown, died May 16, 2009. Born November 27, 1922 in Johnstown, daughter of Michael and Mary (Danko) Piro.   Preceded in death by parents, husband, Anthony C. who died on December 24, 1992; infant sister; and brother, Thomas Piro.  Survived by these children: Robert, married to Carole (Borodach); Richard, married to Victoria (Polacek), and Thomas, married to Mary Frances (Connell); these grandchildren: Matthew; Lindsey; Kylie; Jeremy, married to Crystal (Snyder); Tanya; Lynn, married to Greg (Clement); Francis; Shayna; Matthew, married to Laura (Kaucher); and five great-grandchildren. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Piro, Rose Miller, and Shirley Truscello; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.  She was Salutatorian 1940 Class of Greater Johnstown High School. Retired after 46 years from Glosser Brothers/Gee Bee where she served as a clerk, manager, and buyer. Dorothy was a longtime Democratic Committee Women who received a special award for voting in 50 consecutive general elections.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt who took much pride in the warmth of her family. She especially liked cooking and baking for her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.  She was a longtime member of St. Clare of Assisi Church, formerly St. Anthony Parish, Woodvale, where Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, Rev. Leo F. Arnone.

Mondi, Samuel R., 63, of Johnstown, died May 8, 2009. Born in Johnstown on April 5, 1946, son of the late Samuel P. and Ruth (Zanghi) Mondi.  Survived by loving wife of nearly 24 years, Gail (Harper); brother, Carmen J., North Brunswick, NJ.; and special cousins Peter, Joseph, James, and Anthony Zanghi.  Samuel was a devoted husband who loved visiting Hawaii and enjoyed spending time walking.

Adolph- Eileen L., 64, of Johnstown, died April 22, 2009 in Pittsburgh.  Born August 18,1944 in Johnstown , daughter of James and Margaret ( Morrison ) Boyle.  Preceded in death by : Parents , Husband Joseph J. Adolph, son Gregory, brothers Patrick, Dennis, and Danny Boyle.  Survived by sons Patrick married to Donna Regel , and David all of Johnstown, grandchildren Joshua of Florida Daniel Grandinetti of Philadelphia, Joleen and Jessica, both of Johnstown , sister of Kay Fogel of Johnstown, and Margo of Sharon, Pa.  She was a practicing Licensed Practical Nurse and member of St. Benedict Catholic Church.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Banas, John A., 80, of Southmont, died April 1, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center. Born in Johnstown, on March 12, 1929. Son of the late Frank and Sophie (Slezak) Banas.  Survived by wife, Margaret (Kuba); daughter, Margaret Rutledge; and grandchildren, Jonathan Andrew and Elizabeth Ann Rutledge.

Fantauzzo, Verna M., 76, Johnstown, formerly of Northern Cambria, died March 31, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center. Born in Rossiter, PA, on November 23, 1932. Daughter of Charles and Mary Rose (Perrone) Fantauzzo.  Preceded in death by parents; sister, Dorothy Worthington; nieces Deborah Worthington and Kimberly Yarina; and nephew David Loughner.  Survived by sisters, Nancy Karr; and Rose, married to Robert Loughner; brother, Alfonse; sisters, Frances, married to Vernon Jones; and Carol, married to Ken Yarina; brother, Frank C.; and sister, Paula. Also survived by last living Aunt Rose (Perrone) Rodkey; special cousin, Joseph Perrone; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Verna retired from G. C. Furnary, Dr. James S., 75, of Westmont, loving and devoted husband, father, and "Nunno", died March 29, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center. He will be sadly missed. Born in Johnstown on April 14, 1933, the son of Anthony and Mary (Aveni) Furnary, he was preceded in death by his parents, and by in-laws: John Ondeck; Stephen and Helen Ondeck; Frank and Mary (Ondeck) Slotwinski; and Paul Ondeck.  Survived by loving wife, the former Clare C. Ondeck; by children: Dr. Anthony, married to Julie, Portland, Oregon; Marie, married to Ken Everett, McCall, Idaho; Carol, married to Michael Casparian, Cold Spring, New York; and Jeanne-Marie, married to Michael Stapp, Westford, Massachusetts. Also survived by 14 grandchildren: Alicia, James, Siobhan, and Tristan Furnary; 2nd Lieutenant, U.S.M.C., James Everett, married to Sara, and Alina Everett; Nicholas, Elizabeth, Caroline, and Alexander Casparian; Zoe, Misha, Noah, and John Stapp; by sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Nick Grasso, and by numerous nieces and nephews. A 1951 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School, Dr. Furnary attended U.P.J. and the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College, currently Drexel University, in 1957, served an internship at Memorial Medical Center, and a residency, including chief resident, at Case Western Reserve and University Hospitals of Cleveland. Dr. Furnary was Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1963 and was approved as Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1965. A general surgeon, Dr. Furnary was in private practice and served on the medical staff of Memorial Medical Center and the former Good Samaritan, Mercy, and Lee Hospitals for 45 years. He was chairman of the Department of Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital, and was a board member within the Conemaugh Health System for more than 10 years. Appointed interim C.M.O. at Memorial Medical Center in 2004, Dr. Furnary served in that position for 14 months, and was honored in 2007 by the American Medical Association for the 50-year anniversary of his graduation from Hahnemann Medical College. He also served as president of the Cambria County Medical Society, and was the physician liaison for and a great supporter of the Conemaugh Health Foundation. Beyond the medical field, Dr. Furnary was known for his commitment to the many organizations he supported, including the Family Kitchen and Padre Meals (O.M.O.S.) In 2007, Dr. Furnary received the Apollo Memorial Award from the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies, which recognizes doctors and their families for their civic contributions, and was named one of the Top 100 People by the Pennsylvania Business Central. He has been a board member of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and the regional committee of the River City Brass Band. He was also an active supporter of Birthright. Louise Summerhill, President of Birthright International, said, "He was a presence and a force, and such a committed Catholic." Serving on the O.M.O.S. Finance Council for ten years, Dr. Furnary was a longtime member of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church where Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, the Very Rev. Paul E. Turnbull, V.F., presiding.

Mauro, Ross, 88, Johnstown, died March 27, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center. Born in Johnstown on June 8, 1920, the son of the Nicolo and Rosalia (Puma) Mauro.  Preceded in death by parents; infant son, Nicholas; and sister, Sarah (Freedman) Kane.  Survived by loving wife of 64 years, the former Betty Angello; and children, Linda, married to Donald Daley, Greensburg; and Ross, married to Elena (Thompson), Boston; and Rosalie, married to Dennis Kaszycki, Johnstown. Also survived by nine grandchildren, Amy, married to Drew McCaffrey; Melissa, married to Phillip Moses; Kelley, married to Darryl Audia; and Michael, Matthew, Joceyln, and Christopher Mauro; and Natalie and Nicole Poldiak; five great-grandchildren Andrew, Matthew, and Emily McCaffrey; Katie Moses; and Elise Audia.  Ross served in W.W.II with the Army Air Force; and retired after 45 years of service with Bethlehem Steel.  He was a member of St. John Gualbert Cathedral where Funeral Mass will be held 1:30 PM, Monday, Msgr. Higgins, Connie L., 50, of Johnstown, went to be with God, March 14, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Johnstown, Pa., on September 10, 1958. Daughter of Carl and Lois (Martin) Lavely.  Preceded in death by parents and brother, Daniel.  Survived by loving husband, Gregory S. Higgins, Sr.; children, Gregory S., Jr., Danielle, Victoria, and Kasey, all of Johnstown; brothers, Carl, Jr., married to Patty (Sell); Gary, married to Nellie (Ling); and Harry, married to Karen (Marino), all of Johnstown; and grand-daughter Lilyanna.  Connie was a former employee of Sheetz Corp. and part-time Dept. Manager at WalMart.   She was a member of Franklin St. United Methodist Church.

Murillo, Henry R. "Kiko", 63, formerly of Johnstown, died March 9, 2009 at Allegheny General Hospital ICU, Pittsburgh, following an unexpected illness. Born in Johnstown on October 2, 1945, the son of Henry U. and Mary R. (Arellano) Murillo.  Preceded in death by parents.  Survived by brother, William, married to the former Debra Hudack; and sisters, Sr. Rita C. Murillo, C.S.J., Pittsburgh; Esperanza "Cha-Cha", married to John Bair; Aurora, married to Scott Gilmour; Kathleen, married to James Bumbernick, all of Johnstown; and Juliette, married to Bernard Keelan, Alpharetta, Georgia. Also survived by many nieces and nephews, including most especially Gabriel Murillo and Felicia (Murillo) Battaglia, both of Pittsburgh; uncle and aunt, Ben and Ruth Arellano, Johnstown; aunt, Flo Ann Arellano, WV; and numerous cousins of the Arellano and Prieto families.  Henry was a graduate of B.M.H.S., 1963, and U.P.J., with a Degree in Electronics Engineering. He was a Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Renville during 12 weeks of emergency operations with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific, and participated in landing operations at DaNang, Vietnam.  Retired, with over 32 years of service, from WPXI/Channel 11 in Pittsburgh, as a control room engineer.

Mauro, Clara Jane (Sloan), 78, Johnstown, died March 5, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center. Born June 23, 1930, in Johnstown. Daughter of Christopher and Clara (Gray) Sloan.  Preceded in death by parents; sister, Agnes Fisher; and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Lund) Mauro.  Survived by husband of 58 years, Philip J. Mauro; sons, Michael of Plum Borough; and Christopher, married to Mary of Johnstown; brothers, Charles Sloan, married to Althea; George Sloan, married to Delores; and several nieces and nephews.  Clara loved cooking and baking for her family. One of her favorite pastimes was watching birds. Ed, Deborah Ann "Debbie", 56, of Johnstown, was born to new life February 24, 2009 in Pittsburgh. Born in Johnstown, August 8, 1952, daughter of Jacob and Clara (Marissa) Dolence.  Preceded in death by parents, and son, Ezra.  Survived by loving husband, Mark; sons, Mantra, married to Melissa; and Elijah; and grandchildren, Pearce, Jacob, and Piper. Also survived by brothers, John Dolence, married to Patti; and Edward Dolence, married to Diane; and sister, Agnes, married to John Simkovic.  Debbie was a graduate of Greater Johnstown High School. She was a very loving wife and mother; loved telling children's stories, skiing, and she held a strong, enduring faith.   She was a member of Visitation of the BVM Catholic Church, where family and friends will meet for Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM, Friday, February 27, 2009, Rev. Glover, Hardy "Jiffy", 60, of Moxham/Good Samaritan Care Center, died February 21, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center. Born in Johnstown on July 31, 1948, the son of Henry Hamp Sr. and Irene Glover.  Preceded in death by parents; sister, Freddie Mae Johnson; and brothers, David "Buck" Glover and Henry "Ricky" Glover Jr.  Survived by wife, Carole Smith-Glover; stepson Quenteen Robinson, married to Stephanie; and daughter, Jessica, married to Martin Boswell, Johnstown. Also survived by sister, Delores A., married to Rev. Julius C. Porcher; seven grandchildren; and a host of sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.  Hardy served as a U.S. Marine in the Vietnam War, and received a Purple Heart.

Pappas, Assunta, "Nonna ", 91, Westmont, died February 21, 2009, at Laurel Wood Care Center surrounded by her family. Born March 22, 1917 in Foggia, Italy.  Daughter of Antonio and Anna (Viaggiano) Caputo. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Theodore, who died in 1969; three sisters; and a brother.  Survived by these daughters: Mary, married to Dr. Joel E. Borkow; Rita C., married to John Krupa; Anna Catherine, married to Edward W. Sekerski; and Theodora Pappas; and son Theodore J., married to Lisa of North Carolina. Also survived by sister, Alphonina Russo of Italy; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.  She worked at Martin's Fashions for many years, was a seamstress, and loved her family as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. A longtime member of St. Clement Catholic Church, where Funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, February 24, 2009.

Bongiovanni, Lena, 96, Westmont, died Friday, February 20, 2009, in Johnstown. Born in Sicily, Italy on February 26, 1912. Daughter of Frank and Carmela (Imbesi) Sartiano.  Preceded in death by parents; husband, Vito; children, Nina Wos, Joseph, Frances; brothers Charles, Anthony, and Albert Sartiano; and sisters, Mary Montane, Helen DeSalvo, Josephine Ragno, Velma Allesandro; and son-in-laws, Stephen Youchak and Anthony Falcho.  Survived by children, Anna Falcho and Carmella Youchak, both of Johnstown; Nicoletta, married to Herb Zimmerman of Michigan; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother, Retired Col. Joseph Sartiano of Mass. She dedicated her life to her family and was a very loving mother and grandmother. Also survived by loving nieces and nephews.  Life member of St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, and was very devoted and spent many years at the St. Anthony Festival. Daughter of John and Mary (Washko) Kopsic.  Preceded in death by parents; husband, George A, who died in 1989; brothers Joseph, John, and George; sisters, Mary, Helen, Margaret, Julia, Ann, and Verna; and son-in-law, Alan W. Milkovich. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  Survived by children: Dorothy Milkovich; Margaret, married to Robert Torok; Patricia Macik; Ann Macik; and George Macik, all of Johnstown. Also survived by three grandchildren, Amy, married to Aaron Wiegand, Johnstown; Allis, married to Evan Oswell, Allison Park; and Adam M. Mishler, William J., 84, Upper Yoder. Died peacefully Jan. 23, 2009, at home attended by family and friends. Born August 25, 1924, in Johnstown. He is the son of William J., who was killed in a mining accident in 1925, and Izora (Davis) Mishler, who died in 1957. Preceded in death by an infant grandson, Jeremy Pippin. Survived by these children: Susan, wife of Russell Forks, Wetumpka, Ala.; William J. Jr., San Jose, Calif., two grandchildren; Zachary and Alex Pippin, also in Alabama, and a stepgrandson, Nicholas Forks. Also survived by sister, Arlene, wife of Harry "Buzz" Ullery, Johnstown, and ex-wife, Ruth Ann (Young) Mishler, in Wetumpka. Retired mechanic from Skelley Motors. Also served as a mechanic in the Army as a sergeant.

Daughter of Charles and Martha (Dettling) Haney.  Preceded in death by parents; brothers, Robert, William, James, Eugene, and Vincent Haney; and sister, Mary Grasser.  Last surviving member of her immediate family, she is survived by loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews. Saccone- Philip-J., 82, of Johnstown, died January 11, 2009 at home. Born October 11,1926 in Johnstown.  Son of Joseph and Angeline (Distefano) Saccone.  Preceded in death by parents; sister, Ann and husband, Anthony Genovese; sister, Josephine and husband Philip Sunseri; brother-in-law, Joseph Rosemarino; and longtime companion Faye Galer.  Survived by sister, Sarah Rose Marino, Syracuse, NY; 7 loving nieces and nephews; and many friends.  He retired from American General Insurance Co. after 26 years.  He also owned a shoe repair business in East Conemaugh after WWII for 13 years.  He was a WWII Veteran, Member of VFW Post 155, Life Member and Officer of the Sons of Italy Lodge 1614, and Treasurer for 30 years for the Sons of Italy Club.  A member of the Knights of Columbus, and All Saints Assembly 9136. Philip was a life member and usher of St Clare of Assisi Parish, formerly St. Anthony Parish, Maple Avenue, where Mass will be held 10:00AM, Thursday, January 15, 2009.

Johnson- Robert J. - 40 of Westmont, died suddenly Saturday January 10, 2009 at home. Born February 9, 1968 in Johnstown, PA. Son of Kenneth and Joanne (Casale) Johnson. Preceded in death by Grandparents Joseph and Esther Casale; Father; and aunt Jean Casale.  Survived by mother, Joanne; wife, Susan (Denny); and daughters, Carolyn and Shannon; sister, Polly, married to Archie Klingel, of Port Allegany; mother-in-law, Carol Denny; sister-in-law, Melinda Elliot; and nephews, Sean and Sam Elliott.  1986 graduate of Bishop McCort High School, 1992 ITT Technical Institute specializing in CAD Systems, 1999 School of Truck Driving in Oregon, and spent 8 years driving in Nevada and Idaho.  He had a deep love for his wife, children and family and will be sadly missed. Robert and Susan home- schooled their daughters, and are affiliated with the youth group at Camp Harmony.

Koscienski- Louise, (Rizzo), 84, of 1380 Good Street, died January 2, 2009. Born in Johnstown on September 28, 1924. She was the daughter of Thomas and Sandina (Passero) Rizzo. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Frank who died in 1988; brother, Ralph Rizzo; sister, Angela Sukenik; and nephews, Dennis and Joseph Sukenik.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  Survived by daughters, Debra, married to Leonard J. Facciani, Jr., and Francine, married to David Romesburg, of Arizona; and her grandchildren, Joseph, married to Kylee (Assia); Thomas Facciani; and Denise Romesburg.  Her main interest in life was to be with her family. Other interests included attending church, keeping up on world news, music, talk shows, game shows and movies.

Son of Mark and Anna (Antal) Staib.  Preceded in death by parents; by wife, Dorothy, in 1998; and daughter, Barbara Decker.  Survived by children: James, married to Andrea Rogers, and Patricia, married to Michael Wheeler, all of VA; Christine, married to David Layton; son-in-law, Kevin Decker; brother, Mark, married to Audrey Staib; grandchildren: Noey Staib; Justin and Lucas Wheeler; Collin and Aidan Layton; Erin, married to Michael Choi; and Sean Decker; and great-grandchildren, Gracie, Noah, and Laurelei Choi. Scarletta, Eileen, 89, Johnstown, died December 31, 2008, at home. Born October 5, 1919 in Sparrows Point , MD. Daughter of William and Clara (Yeckley) Regan.   Preceded in death by parents and husband, Oscar, who died in 1998.
Survived by these daughters: Marie married to Robert Whorl, and Eileen married to James Rozich, both of Johnstown; Anne, married to Patrick Bane, Roadsville, VA; also grandchildren: Michael Whorl, married to Julia; Robert Whorl married to Joyce; Jason Whorl, married to Billie; Kelly Rozich; Jamie Duplin; Anthony Rozich, married to Amy; Christopher Rozich, married to Diana; Nadine, married to Steve Urban; Patrick Bane; and Marcie Bane, married to Michael Imbroscio; and 20 great-grandchildren.  She was a retired LPN at Lee Hospital and a member of ISDA Joseph Johns Lodge 214.  Avid Bridge Player and a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, where Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Saturday, January 3, 2009, Rev. James- Donald Earl, 52, Westmont, went to be with the Lord peacefully December 28, 2008 at home. Born January 27, 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio. Son of the late Earl Joseph and Rose Marie (Boley) James.   Survived by mother, wife, the former Gretchen (Seifert), and these children, Robert and fiancé Katrina Woodman, Earl, Alicia, and Russell, and granddaughter, Summer Rose James.  Brother of David married to Patty (Brown) of Lilly, Richard married to Karen (Sweeny) of Portage, and brother-in-law, Michael Seifert of Ft. Myers, Florida.
He worked 27 years as a case manager at Cambria County Area Agency on Aging providing compassion and services to the elderly. He was a volunteer for 10 years with the Boys Scouts of America, Penns Woods Council. He was past Grand Knight of Our Lady of the Alleghenies Council 4604 and member of the All Saints Assembly Council 279, Knights of Columbus. He was a faithful packer and truck driver to St. Elizabeth's Mission Church in Ravenna, Kentucky.

Daughter of Sam and Frances (Scrofani) Morello.  Preceded in death by parents; husband, Carmen R., Sr.; son, Carmen R., Jr.; and brothers, Sam and George.  Survived by granddaughters, Cathy, married to Scott Snyder, Philadelphia; and Robin, married to Don Chieco, New Jersey; daughter-in-law, Sally Scottson Cugini, Clearfield; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Steven, and Jonathan Snyder, and Nicholas and Brett Chieco; sister, Dorothy, married to Arthur Adams, Ohio. Also survived by nephew George Morello; and nieces Debra, married to Robert Clifford; and Georgia, married to Dr. Thomas Decker; and Saundra Pritchett.  Formerly employed as a nurse at Lee Hospital and Valley Oral Surgeons.  Member of St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, Johnstown.

Daughter of Henry and Teresa (Kielpinski) Siuda.  Preceded in death by parents; and sister, Grace Stasiewicz.  Survived by husband, Robert L. with whom she celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 8, 2008; daughter, Angela C., wife of Timothy Miller, Johnstown; son Michael R., married to Carrie (Esguera), Alexandria, VA; grandsons Eric and Adam; and brother-in-law Daniel Stasiewicz, Milwaukee, WI.  Former administrative assistant with Lockheed Martin, Moorestown, NJ; bowled for many years in the Town and Country Bowling League; member of Lifestyles at Windber Hospital; and she loved to go gambling.  Member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.

Also, sadly missed by many family and friends.  Bill was a retired Turn Foreman at the Wheel Plant of Bethlehem Steel with 37 years service; former Fire Chief at Westwood V.F.C.; member of Knights of Columbus and a life member of the V.F.W. Post 155; and a W.W.II Army Veteran, serving in the European Theatre in the 71st Artillery Division.

Pingtella, Joseph E. Sr., 71, died December 19, 2008 in Windber Hospice. Born in Johnstown on January 15, 1937, the son of the late Louis and Rosella (Galardi) Pingtella.  Preceded in death by brother, Henry and sisters, Mary Ciccozzi and Emma Casale.  Survived by wife Mary Ann (Navarro), and these children: Celeste Pingtella, Ft. Irwin, CA; Joseph E., Jr. married to Anneke (Bourgeois), Memphis, TN; and Louis Pingtella, Farmington, PA. Also survived by brother Frank and Adele Pingtella, Buffalo, NY; sisters, Jennie married to Marlin Meyers, New Baltimore, PA, and Betty Shank, New Paris, PA; and grandchildren Tatiana and Sophie Pingtella.  Joseph is President of the Union Social Bowling League, Vice President of the Union Social Club, played in the AAABA Tournament in 1953, and is a volunteer for the AAABA. He retired from General Dynamics as PM Supervisor, San Diego, CA.  He was a member of Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church where funeral mass will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, December 23, 2008, Rev. Born in Baltimore, MD on January 25, 1922, the daughter of the late Granville Linwood and Marion Magruder (Owen) Soper.  Preceded in death by parents, and husband David E. Townley, who died May 5, 2002.  Survived by daughter Ann W. married to Thomas Bruce Mock, Westminster, MD; and son, David E. Townley, Jr., San Francisco, CA; brothers, G. Owen Soper and John C. Soper, both of Baltimore, MD: grandchildren Douglas and Jeffrey Mock, and great-grandson Kyle Benjamin Mock.  Served on the Board at the YWCA, and member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Calabrese, Salvatrice G. "Sally", 86, of Windber, formerly of Greensburg and Johnstown, died December 14, 2008 in Windber. Born Dec. 21, 1921 in Greensburg, she was the daughter of the late Carmel and Josephine (Mangnello) Avampato. Survived by husband, Joseph A. Calabrese to whom she was married for 62 years, and two daughters, Janice A. wife of Andrew Diodato, and Marcia wife of Dr. Christopher Sommer, both of New Jersey.
Also survived by three grandsons, Drew Diodato and his wife Jennifer; Joseph P. Diodato, and his wife Irene; and Christopher C. Sommer, Jr.; great-granddaughters, Brittany and Drew Jennifer Diodato; great-grandsons Benicio and Lorenzo Diodato; stepgreat-grandson Jacob Koerkel, all of NJ; sister, Josephine Restivo, Johnstown; brother Joseph Avampato, and wife, Florence, of Greensburg; and many nieces and nephews. Graduate of Greensburg High School and Greensburg School of Cosmetology, she also attended Seton Hill College. She was the past owner of Avon Beauty Salon in Greensburg and a member of ISDA Joseph Johns Lodge # 214. She was a life time member of weight watchers. She was also the past President of the Lower Yoder PTA and active for many years, receiving a Life Membership award from the PTA. Costlow, Lawrence James, 53, Evergreen, CO, formerly of Stevensville, MD, died November 28, 2008 in Evergreen, CO. Born in Johnstown, October 14, 1955, the son of the late Donald Clair and Mary (Wolfe) Costlow. Survived by sister Patricia, married to Howard Ulep of Annapolis, MD; brother Neil Costlow and Barbara Brooks of Johnstown; nephews, Kyle, Craig, Ryan, and Mark Ulep; and special friend Millie Weisenborne. Graduate of Westmont Hilltop High School and St. Francis University where he was a member and captain of the Red Flash golf team. Worked locally as an auditor/tax accountant for Glosser Brothers and the Altoona School District before relocating to Maryland to pursue a career in painting, refinishing, and historic preservation.

Unger (Ungaro), Adeline T., 98, of Johnstown died December 6, 2008 at Presbyterian Home. Born April 21, 1910 in Johnstown. Daughter of Stephen and Maria (Nicoletti) Ungaro.  Preceded in death by parents; sister Mary Crisafulli; brothers Michael, William and Samuel Ungaro; and nieces Theresa Crisafulli, Angeline Pettina, and Helen Crisafulli.  Survived by nieces Mary Louise Crisafulli, Anne (Crisafulli) Barber, Mary Ann (Ungaro) Reiser, Patricia (Ungaro) Oldrati, and Eileen (Unger) Tantorno; and nephews Anthony (Corkey) Crisafulli and Steve Unger; and numerous great-nieces and -nephews.  She was a retired worker from Cay Artley Dress Factory where she worked for over 30 years.  She was a lifetime member of Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, formerly St. Anthony, in Woodvale, where a funeral mass will be held 11 AM, Wednesday, December 10, Rev. Torchia, Mary E., 81, of Westmont, died November 22, 2008 in New York. Born May 26, 1927 in Buffalo, NY. Daughter of William R. and Catherine (Mooney) Caton.  Preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul J.; daughter Paulette Miller; grandson Ryan; brothers James, Bill, Francis, and Robert Caton; sisters Catherine, Imelda, and Ruth Caton.  Survived by son Michael married to Judy (Martin) and grandchildren Paulette and Martin Torchia all of Georgia; daughter Theresa married to Greg Tama of New York where she was visiting when she took ill; son-in-law Keith R. Miller; sisters Dorothy DeSantis and Teresa Benning; and brother Joseph Caton.  She was a retired nursing supervisor for the former Mercy Hospital of Johnstown where she assisted in establishing Johnstown's first renal dialysis unit. She was also a senior pier counselor for St. Vincent DePaul and former board member of MERHO Credit Union.  A longtime and devoted member of Visitation Church BVM where Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, November 26, at 10:00 AM.

Born in Johnstown on April 6, 1947, the son of Samuel and Christine (Johncola) Barber.  Preceded in death by parents, father- and mother-in-law Francis and Vera Van.  Survived by devoted and loving wife of 38 years, Darlin (Van); children Tiffany Alicardi and Frank Jason and fiancee Rebecca Rayman; brother Nunzio married to Billie (Burke), Johnstown; and sisters Rosa married to Alan Homan, Johnstown; and Tina Barber, Maryland; niece and nephews Sam Barber, Kara Gustkey, Todd and Alan Homan; and special cousins Frank "Milo" Barber and Frank "Bonie" Barber. Also survived by great niece and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and many special friends, especially Jack Boast, Jimmy McCarthy, Ed Mikesic, and Joe Canini.  Frank was a 1966 graduate of the Greater Johnstown High School, and was formerly employed at the Bethlehem Steel Car Shop. He retired from the Johnstown America Corp., and was former President of the Local Steelworkers 2635. Frank was an avid hunter and belonged to several pool leagues. He loved his family, friends, and Christmas.

Mauro, Lucille K. "Lucy"-72 Westmont-died November 11, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center. Born March 14, 1936 in Johnstown. Daughter of Anthony and Louise (Pheil) Kush. Preceded in death by her parents, Husband Joseph " Dee" who died June 20, 2008.  Survived by these children, Michelle, Michael, Matthew, all of Johstown and Marianna m/t Mark Calabrese-Pittsburgh, Grandson Joseph, and these brothers, Ralph Kush m/t Susan of Pittsburgh, Arthur Kush m/t Joan, Anthony Kush m/t Nancy, and sister Audrey Hrbal. Also, nieces and nephews and especially niece Debbie Kralik who gave her special care during her hospital stay.  She was a graduate of Ferndale High School. She loved to collect antiques, take bus trips to the casinos where she made so many friends, planting flowers at "Lucy Park". Stumpo, Dante "Doc" 80, Johnstown, died suddenly Saturday November 1, 2008. Born in Johnstown, November 22, 1927 . Son of Frank Sr. and Edith (Altimore) Stumpo.  Preceded in death by his parents, sisters Fanny and spouse Joseph Chirillo, Loretta Stumpo, sister in law Marie Stumpo, and brother in law John Angelo.
He is survived by wife, the former Ruth (Pingatore) Stumpo, son Dante Jr. married to Blanca of Silver Springs, Maryland , 4 grandchildren Dante III, Carlos, Michael, and Cristina.  Brothers Samuel "Joseph" married to Pauline (Gironda), Mary Angelo married to Eugene DeLusa, Domenick "Mickey" married to Josephine Anastasi , Anthony "Buck", Frank Jr married to Jeanie (Manganello), Louise Married to Edward Mattis all of Johnstown, and James married to Gail (Cordaro) of Colorado, also many nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in law, and their families. "Doc" had many close and devoted friends including his Coney Island Pals.  He was a loving husband , father, and grandfather. His gift of humor and personality will never be forgotten. A 1946 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School. He retired from United Metal Fabricators .  A member of the Sons of Italy Lodge 1614, and was an avid bowler.

Born in Los Angeles, CA, on November 18, 1929, daughter of William Peter and Edna Agnus (Mayher) McCandless. Preceded in death by parents and husband Richard G. Hall.  Survived by daughters Mollie Ann Hall CA; and Dr. Mary B. married to Ivar Berge, Johnstown; and grandchildren Alexander Hall-Raines and Melanie Garcia  Mrs. Hall was a Legal Secretary who worked closely in the office of her loving husband.

Farren, Jack, 77, formerly of Franco Avenue and Emmett Drive, Johnstown, passed away October 25, 2008, at Memorial Medical Center. Born April 29, 1931, in Indiana, PA. Preceded in death by mother, Alice (Lambing) Fairman, and wife, Jane (Huhn) Farren, who recently passed away October 15, 2008. Survived by sons, Gary, Johnstown, and Larry, Arizona. Jack was a well-known clothing salesman at Miller's, Main Street. He was known for his colorful and outgoing personality and his deep love for art and music. He was a long-standing and active member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church. Private services were held at Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana, PA. A memorial service for Jack will be held at 3 PM, Wednesday at Sunnehanna Country Club, immediately following at 3:30 PM will be a gathering of friends and family for both Jack and Jane. Born in Johnstown, on December 24, 1949, the son of the late Stephen and Anna (Gaydos) Kurcin.  Survived by sister Kathryn married to Raymond Zabala; brother Paul married to Elaine (Michaels), all of Johnstown; niece Gina Kurcin; nephew Joseph Kurcin; great-nieces Lataisha and Mercedes; daughters Stacey and Megan; and grandchildren. Also survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Formerly employed by ConRail, and currently employed at Zepka Harley Davidson. Stephen was a very devoted friend and neighbor, and loved Harley Davidsons.

Burns, Sr.; sisters Barbara Pastuch and Penny Compari; and brother Jack Pentrack.  Survived by sons Dr. Frank Burns married to Pam; and Steven Michael Burns, all of Cleveland; grandchildren Tammi Lynn Burns married to Eston Mayberry, of Ooltewah, TN; Frank P. Burns, III; Stefanie Marie Burns; Travis John Burns, married to Sarabeth; Patrick Michael Burns; Megan Clinard married to Ryne, all of Cleveland; Mark Kalmanek of Sharon, PA; and great-grandson Aiden John Burns of Cleveland. Also survived by sisters Betty Manda married to Edward of Johnstown; and Mary Jurich married to Mitch of Vineland, NJ; and several nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Burns served on the Johnstown, Pennsylvania School Board and operated the Daycare at the Y.W.C.A. in Johnstown. She loved Polka music and dancing.

Born in Smithfield, PA on February 24, 1930, the daughter of Harland and Bertha (Burchinal) Huhn.  Preceded in death by parents, brothers Charles S. Huhn and Ross J. Huhn; and nephew Christopher Huhn.   Survived by husband Jack; sons Gary of Johnstown, and Larry of Arizona; nephew Ted Huhn of Maryland; and niece Holly Huhn of New Hampshire.  Jane was a graduate of the Indiana Teachers College (IUP) who taught Art at Westwood Elementary School and other schools in the Johnstown School District. She was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter and caregiver. She also loved wildlife and flowers and was an avid gardner.  She was an active member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church.

Murphy, Daniel A., 49, Johnstown died at home October 1, 2008. Born in Bristol, PA on August 6, 1959, the son of John D. and Patricia D. (Stephenson) Murphy.  Preceded in death by parents. Survived by loving wife Margaret "Peggy" (Henry); sons Robert and Anthony; adopted sons Jay, Jessie, and Red; granddaughter Liana; brothers John Murphy, married to Wendy (Trabin); and Stephen Murphy married to Denise (Johnston); and sister Patricia Murphy.  Daniel worked with Visions Marketing. He loved woodworking, fishing, playing guitar, art, and gourmet food. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and brother, who had a great sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 PM, Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel, corner of Locust and Jackson streets with Pastor John Bennett officiating.

 

 

Aust, John A, 71, of Kahuku, Hawaii, a native of Johnstown, died unexpectedly on September 21, 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand. Born in Johnstown on March 14, 1937, son of John Louis and Stella Gertrude (Erlinger) Aust. Preceded in death by parents. Survived by sisters Agnes, married to Robert Alt of Tullahoma, TN, and Linda, married to Francis Zima of Johnstown. Also survived by nieces Leslie Zima, Florida; Beth Ann (Alt), married to Francois Legrain, Tennessee; Lynn Ann "Be" (Alt), married to Jay Harrison, Tennessee; nephews Matthew Zima and Jonathan Zima, both of Johnstown; and two great-nephews and one great-niece, all of Tennessee.  He was a 1955 graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force 1957 thru 1960. He was trained in electronic communications and was assigned to many communication sites in Central Europe during his active duty period.  He began his career in 1961 with the Central Intelligence Agency and served with distinction in the Agency for 32 years. He was awarded the CIA Career Intelligence Medal and was cited for Exceptional Achievement upon his retirement. He served around the globe, in Washington D.C., Africa, Central and South America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the Far East, Europe, Australia, and the Mid-Pacific.  John received the "Intelligence Star" for his work in Southeastern Asia, "given by the CIA for voluntary acts of courage performed under hazardous conditions and services rendered with distinction under conditions of grave risk." John received other prestigious awards and citations for exceptional performances on assignments in Southeast Asia and the Middle East between 1968 and 1992. After his retirement, he made his home in Hawaii and continued working part-time with Government Contract Operations. He was working for Global Communication Systems on assignment in Bangkok at the time of his death.  John loved his work, and deep sea fishing, photography, college and NFL football. He was a member of REFCOM (Retired Federal Communicators). He will be sadly missed by family and a network of friends and colleagues across the world.

O'Malley, James Francis, 82, of Westmont, died September 30, 2008, unexpectedly after injuries from a fall. Born February 11, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Cresson, PA. Preceded in death by parents, James T. O'Malley and Frances (Hessmer) O'Malley and brother Donald R. O'Malley. Survived by wife of 49 years, Jean (Hughes) O'Malley and daughter Margaret A. O'Malley, both of Johnstown; brother John B. O'Malley and sister-in-law Barbara O'Malley of Ohio; brother-in-law William R. Hughes, Windber, brother-in-law Thomas G. Hughes, State College, sister-in-law Marjorie Hughes, Johnstown; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. O'Malley was an active trial lawyer for more than 55 years, and practiced with his daughter Margaret in the firm Yost & O'Malley in Johnstown.  U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, European and Pacific Theaters. Director of AmeriServ Trust & Financial Services Company and Director of the former USBancorp, Inc. Solicitor of the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, long-time Board member and supporter of the American Cancer Society Cambria Unit, Past Commander of the American Legion in Cresson, former President of the Cresson Lions Club, Charter Member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and active in many other organizations.

Petrowski, Robert J., "Bob", 56, of Westmont, went to be with the Lord, September 19, 2008. Born in Johnstown, January 29, 1952. Son of Stanley and Frances (Holbay) Petrowski.  Preceded in death by his father who died in 2006 and brother-in-law Frank Blair, Sr. who died in 2008. Survived by his Mother; sister Irene Blair of Windber; brothers Wallace of Northville, Michigan, and David, married to Patricia (Bromberg) of Lapeer, Michigan. Also survived by nieces Christine Miller, Connie Wilson, wife of Chuck, and Katelyn "Katie" Petrowski; nephews Frank Blair, Jr. and A. J. Petrowski; many cousins, Aunts, Uncles, and special friends Cindy Yingling and Diane Miller.  Bob graduated in 1970 from Bishop McCort High School. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard in 1971, with the 28th Infantry Division, 103rd Armor Military Police. He was employed at Allegheny Manufacturing and Electric Service, formerly Westinghouse, as motor and apparatus winder since 1970.  Bob was a meticulous craftsman. His workmanship was always of highest quality. When he finished a job, everyone knew it was done the right way. He enjoyed simple things in life such as gardening, woodworking, mechanical repairs. His hobbies included working on his vehicles, which always had a high shine. His home and landscaping were always spotless and orderly. He enjoyed all forms of auto racing, and had an extensive collection of model racing and sports cars. He loved small animals and would carry treats for them in his truck. Relatives and friends will now miss his advice and assistance in projects that they would ask his help. He could always be relied upon, and would not easily say no. He was a caring and loving son and brother, and tried to provide well for his parents. Dr. Ali Mehraban Samii passed at home on September 13, 2008 enjoying a wonderful life of 68 years. He is survived by his wife Jean, siblings Akbar and Fereshteh, children Soraya and Jason as well as four beautiful grandchildren. For greater than 30 years Dr. Samii provided thoracic and vascular surgical services to the Johnstown region. He is known for his compassion to those served, and has touched many with his kind, gentle and generous nature. His spirit is echoed in his labor and dedication for his Somerset County farm. He will be remembered for his whimsical liberal political views, his passion for the arts, and his devotion to close friends. He has remained a great inspiration to his family and friends and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Chessa, Raymond J., Sr., died September 11, 2008 at Orlando Regional Medical Center, Orlando, Fla. Born February 28, 1929 in Vintondale, the son of Joseph and Paulina (Pinna) Chessa.  Preceded in death by parents; brother Frank; and sisters Mary Hollern and Lena Krstulich.  Survived by wife of 55 years, Agnes (Yasenosky) and these children: son Ray married to Catherine (Bango), Johnstown; daughter Jeanne married to James McKnight, Orlando, Fla.; and son Joseph married to Irene (Sulosky) Orlando, Fla.; sisters Jenny White and Catherine Ritchey, Johnstown; also survived by 8 grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was proud of his Italian Heritage. Also a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kissimmee, Fla., where memorial service will be held at a later date.  He was a retired welder from Bethlehem Steel Co. and served in the U. S. Army in Korea, also a lifetime member of the V. F.W.

Cerula, Rose Marie (Duca), died September 09,2008, at Memorial Medical Center.  Born in Johnstown on July 16, 1931, daughter of the late Peter and Josephine (Saia) Duca.  Preceded in death by brothers Frank Duca Sr., John Duca, sister Nancy Duca, and sisters Carmela and Josephine in early childhood.  Survived by husband Andrew Sr.; and these children: Andrew Jr., Johnstown; Marianne, Pittsburgh; Roseanne married to Lawrence Galeza, Erie; Michael, Waterford; Carol Anne married to Gene Kelly, Indianapolis, IN.
Survived by 16 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; brothers Dr. Robert Duca married to the former Zoraida Gutierrez, Johnstown; and Peter Duca married to the former Ann Yagich, Campbell, Ohio. Also, sisters-in-law Grace Duca and Elvira Duca, Delmont.  Former bookkeeper at Ft. Stanwix Hotel, United Cerebral Palsy and receptionist at Sunnehanna Country Club; and in later life, a cook for Bishop Pelczar Manor.   She was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church where funeral mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Preceeded in death by parents; brothers, Salvatore and Bartolo; sister Domenica Daniele.  Survived by wife of 61 years, Verna (Pasqualini) and these sons: Sebastian married to the former Camille Campo of Shreveport La., and Arthur; and grandchildren Michelle, Angela, and Monica  He was employed as a Laboratory Administrator at Newton Wellsley Hospital  He served during WW II 1941-1945.  Graduated from Boston University in 1947.

Cartwright, James J., "Gunner", 77, died September 5, 2008, at Conemaugh Medical Center, Johnstown. Born in Johnstown, PA on September 4, 1931, the son of the late George and Olene (Stevens) Cartwright.  Retired Teacher from the Westmont Hilltop High School.  Survived by his son: Brian L., married to the former Donna Weaver; grandson Benjamin, granddaughter Rebecca, and great-grandchildren Jordan and Ashlena Rose Cartwright, all of Johnstown. Also special friend Marilyn Chuba.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  "Gunner" was an avid historian, firearms collector, hunter and shooter. A Korean Veteran he served thirteen years as an NCO and Officer in local USAR units. His memberships included NRA Endowment Life, NRA Golden Eagles, The Gettysburg Foundation, Civil War Preservation Trust and American Legion Post 294.

Schaefer, Thomas J. M.D., 81, of Johnstown died peacefully with his family by his side on September 7, 2008 at the Memorial Medical Center in the Palliative Care Unit. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 28, 1927, son of John William and Mae C. (Passar) Schaefer.   After graduating from Fordham Preparatory School, he enrolled at Georgetown University. He served in the Navy as a corpsman from 1945-1947 and received his B.S. from Georgetown in 1948; in 1952 he received his M.D., also from Georgetown. After an internship in Newark, NJ, he took a residency in Surgery at Mount Alto Hospital in Washington, DC and a Surgical Association in the Columbia Hospital, Columbia, SC. He married Genevieve Kelly on June 9, 1956; in 1958 they moved to Johnstown, where they raised their six children.  Tom dedicated his life to three abiding passions: his family, his faith, and his work. He practiced General Surgery in Johnstown for over 35 years and derived fulfillment from contact with his patients. He was President of the Cambria County Medical Society in 1975, and served one year as President of the Mercy Hospital Medical Staff. A faithful and devout Catholic, he attended daily mass at Our Mother Of Sorrows Church. Above all, he loved and cared for his wife and children. Out of their special love for their Down Syndrome son, Michael, Tom and Gene were active for many years in the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Citizens. Tom also served on the board of Cambria Residential Services.  Preceded in death by his parents and sisters Mary Frances Koschier and Ann Marie Spinner. Survived by wife, Genevieve; children Thomas Leon married to Dianne (Spagnol), Pittsburgh; Matthew John, Pittsburgh; Margaret Mary married to Stephen Katter, Ridgewood, NJ; Michael Joseph, Johnstown; John Kelly, Pittsburgh; William Wyrough married to Cathy (Bibel), Pittsburgh; and grandchildren Jacklyn, Alyssa, Zachary, Kathryn, Jane, Michael Cole, and Lillian. They would have been married 60 years, February 19, 2009. DeRosa, Nellie, 87, died September 5, 2008 at Good Samaritan Nursing Care. Born in Johnstown on May 10, 1921, the daughter of Raphael and Eliza (Martire) DeRosa.  Preceded in death by parents; these brothers and sisters: Matilda Unger, Pete DeRosa, Louise Guzzi, Charlie DeRosa, Helen Guzzi, John DeRosa, and Tony DeRosa; and nephew Louis Guzzi. Nellie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.  Survived by these nieces and nephews: Eileen married to William Tantorno, Johnstown; Bonnie married to Frank Babik, Murrysville; Elizabeth "Bunny" married to Bob Weimer, Pittsburgh; Louise "Beezie" married to Doug Crum, Johnstown; and Marcia widow of Louis Guzzi, Johnstown. Stofko, Larry Philip, 58, died August 27, 2008 at home. Born in Johnstown on August 30, 1949, the son of Larry Stofko and Marguerite (Price) Drechsel.  Preceded in death by father and sister Nancy (Dern) Mathison.  Survived by mother.  Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Master of Science Degree from Robert Morris University. He was an avid outdoors man who loved to hunt and fish. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Virostek, Edward R., 85, of Upper Yoder Township, died August 21, 2008 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born in Johnstown on May 7, 1923, son of the late John and Susan (Koval) Virostek.  Preceded in death by beloved wife of 54 years Philomena "Phyllis" (Pecora) who died September 22, 2003; brothers Joseph Virostek and Steve Vyrostek; and sister Anne Feleshak.  Survived by children Ronald, married to Barbara (Hlivko); Marianne, married to Gary Simpson; Lisa, married to Kerry Sadvari, all of Johnstown; grandchildren, Eric Virostek married to Megan; Chad Virostek; Mark Simpson married to Kristi; Amy Simpson; Jessica Sadvari and David Sadvari; and great-grandson Colin Virostek. Also survived by brothers Andrew and Francis, both of Florida, and John of New Jersey; and sisters Margaret Vyrostek and Mary Chamiok, both of Johnstown.  Edward was a Veteran of World War II, U.S. Army Medical Corp., ambulance driver. Graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and retired from PNC Bank. He loved to golf, attend to his garden, and work out at the YMCA, where he was a member of the silver sneakers. He was an avid Johnstown Chiefs Hockey fan, and he attended and watched with pride, all of his grandchildren's sporting and musical events. He was a quiet man, whose devotion to his family will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts. We, his children and grandchildren, were truly blessed to have him in our lives.

Scaletta, Anne, 93, died August 12, 2008 at Laurelwood Convalescent Care Center. Born in Johnstown on October 25, 1914, the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Piazza) Scaletta. Preceded in death by brothers Sylvester, Frank and Oscar; sisters Florence Guagliardo, Marianna Mauro and Angeline Messina. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survived by niece Mary H. Wentz, with whom she resided, and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and sister-in-law, Eileen Scarletta. Anne retired as a Garment Worker at Kay Artley, and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America #647, San Rocco's Society, Padre Pio Prayer Group, Garment Workers Retirees Club. She was an excellent seamstress and took pride in making her own clothing and also made clothing for her neices when they were young. She made lap quilts for shut-ins, and stuffed toys for children. Also dedicated volunteer for the church festivals. She was a member of Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church and choir, where Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 16, 2008, Rev. Leo F. Arnone.

Smith, Jennifer Mae, 26, of Johnstown . Her life was taken in an automobile accident on August 4, 2008 in Pittsburgh. She was born December 18, 1981 in Richmond, Virginia. Beloved Daughter of Norman W. Smith, Altoona , and Kathleen (Wargo) Smith, Johnstown. Also survived by her adoring daughter Alexis Rayne; loving brother Jason Smith, Johnstown , and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  2000 Graduate of Westmont Hilltop High School where she was a cheerleader. Attended Mt. Aloysius College and a former ambassador for the AAABA. Formerly employed at NCO on Lyter Drive.  Although the Lord took Jennifer so soon, he gave her the most beautiful gift, a special daughter "Lexie" to love and help her begin her path in this world. Jennifer passed onto Lexie her strengths, her courage, caring ways and love to help others. Their bond will continue, as the memory of mother and daughter will live forever. Jennifer will be greatly missed by all.

(Devlin) Quinn.  Preceded in death by parents, son L. Joseph, brothers Edward and Jack and sister Kathryn Mae Daschbach-Evans.  Survived by wife, the former Anne Glancy; daughters Maureen married to David Clark, Elizabeth married to Michael Nati, and Susan married to Thomas McAneny, all of Johnstown; grandchildren Joseph, Patrick, Meghan, and Kathleen Clark; Kelly and Kathryn Hutchinson, Morgan Nati; Matthew, Anne, Timothy, Mark, Molly, T. J., and Neil McAneny. Also survived by sister Mary Jane Hyatt, Pittsburgh and brother L. James Quinn married to former Katie Koontz, Ridgewood, N. J.   Retired Southmont Borough Tax Collector. Gerber, Joseph, 83, died July 23, 2008 at Conemaugh Medical Center. Born in Johnstown, PA on February 21, 1925, the son of William Otto and Olga Theresa (Kant) Gerber.  Preceded in death by brother William H. Gerber and sister Mary Elizabeth Jacobson-Karwoski.  Survived by wife Esther Ellen (Penrod); children Keith married to Caroline (Mowery), Johnstown; Sharon married to Ray Constable, Michigan; Dennis married to Isabelle (Pagliaro), Baltimore, MD; and Joseph married to Candy (Constable), Michigan; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Joseph was retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation, was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion, Johnstown, and served in the U.S. Navy during WW I I and the Korean Conflict.  He was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of Saint John Gualbert Cathedral, Johnstown, where funeral mass will be held 10 AM, Saturday, July 26 with Msgr. George B. Flinn, V.G. officiating.

Stopko, Joseph M. 65, Southmont, called home unexpectedly on July 20, 2008 surrounded by his loving wife and children. Born August 18, 1942 in Windber. Son of the late Joseph A. and Olga (Dyorich) Stopko. Survived by his loving wife of 44 years, the former Nancy C. Walter, daughter Lisa, wife of Michael Robson and son J. Brian, both of Johnstown; grandchildren Krista, Kelsey and Joshua Robson and J. Scott and Amanda N. Stopko; and great-grandchildren Taleah Christian and Keith A. Stopko-Jefferson. Also survived by sisters Dixie Kelly, Windber, and Debra Korhut, Enola. Also many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, and special nephew Matthew Kelly. Retired Supervisor from the Generation Dept. GPU-Penelec. Owner of Lawn Tamers. Member of the BPOE # 175 and The Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship. A 1960 graduate of Windber High School where he played on the football team. Continued his education and received many Associate degrees and certifications. Avid Outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He coached little league, and was involved with his grandchildren in hockey, football, basketball, soccer and cheerleading. He was a kind and compassionate man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

(Gates) Heeter.   She was the loving wife of the late William M. Phillips for 55 years. Preceded in death by son William D. and sister Mabel Wadsworth.  Survived by her daughter; Judith A. wife of Robert M. Hess, Lancaster; Granddaughters Jennifer M. Hess and Emily M. wife of Michael L. Wenger, both of Lancaster; and 2 great-grandsons Luke and Logan Wenger. Also survived by sisters: Betty wife of Jack Schooley, Bradenton, FL; Dorothy Heath, Brevard, NC; and Juanita Stinson, Seward; and brother Curtis Heeter married to the former Gail Zoerb, Johnstown. Phillips.  She was a graduate of the former Dale H.S., a demonstrator for Sunbeam Appliances and retired from the former Riverside Markets. She was a former Sunday School Teacher, lifetime deacon and member of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren. Gleason, Jr. married to E. Jeanne Adamson, Christopher Kenna Gleason married to Janet R. Ruth all of Johnstown, Pamela Gleason Murdock of Washington, D.C.; brother-in-law Andrew J. Gleason of Westmont; sister-in-law Elizabeth Gleason Huber of Gettysburg; and sister-in-law Mary Ann Gleason. Also survived by grandchildren Jane E. Gleason, Michael P. Gleason, Robert A. Gleason, III, Jonathan C. Gleason, John E. Murdock, IV, Thomas G. Murdock, Jennifer Gleason, Christopher Gleason, Meghan Gleason, and Kevin Gleason; and great-grandchildren R. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her beach house in Avalon, NJ, doing needlepoint and gardening. She also enjoyed classical music and attending the Johnstown Symphony. Lydic, Marianne, died June 29, 2008 at Conemaugh Medical Center. Born in Johnstown, June 26, 1926. Daughter of the late Frank A. and Antoinette (Ross) Gross formerly of Daisytown. Preceded in death by husband Fred W. who died October 29, 1992; brothers Francis Gross, James Gross, Thomas Gross, and Joseph Gross; and sisters Clara Gerber and Gertrude Gross; and grandson Nathan McCoy.  Survived by daughter Sherry McCord of Keene, NH, sons Frederick Lydic married to Donna of O'Fallon, MO, and Michael Lydic married to Sandra of Wading River, NY. Also survived by grandchildren Melinda McCoy, Courtney Lydic, Maria Lydic, and Mikey Lydic.  She was the youngest and last surviving member of her immediate family. She was known as "Penny" to her JHS Classmates of 1944. Marianne had a successful career spanning more than 20 years as a medical secretary and administrator working in the Pathology department of former Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, and also the Medical Department of Bethlehem Steel Co.

Preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and a sister. Survived by husband Dr. Jas N.; and sons Vishaal married to Melanie Byler, Gettysburg, and Roshan married Nina Surber, New York City, NY. Brother Jaman V. Patel, sisters in law Kanta, Daya, Kuvar, brothers in law, nieces and nephews.  She graduated from Radiography School at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, England. She enjoyed crocheting and cooking.  Nita was a devoted and loving wife and mother and will be sadly missed by many friends.

Reitz, James L. ("Big Jim"), 86, formerly of Highland Avenue, died June 28, 2008 at Conemaugh Medical Center. Born October 7, 1921 in Johnstown. Son of Lester C. and Mary Josephine (Short) Reitz. Preceded in death by parents, brothers Richard and William, sisters Jane, Ethel, Rosemary, and Lois Jones. Survived by wife of 58 years, the former Agnes Devine Torchia; children Denise married to John Mowry; Lester and companion Joan Viskovick of Arizona; Roxanne married to Mike Ballow; and Mary Elizabeth Buchan with whom he resided. Also survived by brothers Lester married to Margaret Fox of Johnstown; and Donald married to Alice Forbes of Florida; brother-in-law Joseph Jones of Windber; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Frank and Ann Torchia of Johnstown. Also, 5 grandchildren Jessica Mowry married to Thomas Litz, Jennifer Mowry, Jacquelyn Mowry, Michael Ballow III, and James Buchan. James was a retired Conductor for Conemaugh and Blacklick Railroad, a WWII Army Veteran of the Signal Corps in the Italian Campaign. Member of the American Legion Post 113 and the VFW. Lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, and Sunshine Beach Colony. He loved music and played multiple instruments. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at his summer cottage in Bedford. His smile and warm disposition will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Garman, Richard H.,
65, of Westmont, died at an early hour Friday, June 27, 2008, at his home. Mr. Garman was born July 8, 1942 in Johnstown to Lawrence E. Sr. and Catherine (Redick) Garman. In 1965 he married Barbara S. Fogelsanger who died September 21, 1999. Mr. Garman is survived by two daughters Karen B. Garman and fiancé Michael Filia and Lisa K. Garman, all of Johnstown. He is also survived by his brother Lawrence E. Garman, Jr. of Johnstown, niece Amy Pascarella, and nephews Lawrence E. III, and Douglas Garman.  A loving and devoted husband and father, he was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and owner of Garman Realty. He was actively involved in the Beginnings organization, and the Westmont Presbyterian Church. He held a strong Christian faith, cherished his family and friends, and enjoyed golf and fitness. He was also a longtime member of Sunnehanna Country Club.

Pavlosky, Robert L., (R.L. Pavlosky), 66, late of Westmont, died June 27, 2008 at home. Born February 12, 1942 in Johnstown, PA. Son of Robert S. and Marie T. (Kesslak) Pavlosky.  Preceded in death by his beloved father and his wife of 27 years, the late Patricia A. (Zagrodnick) Pavlosky.  Survived by daughter Carol M. A. Pavlosky and son Robert J. S. Pavlosky of Johnstown; mother Marie T. (Kesslak) Pavlosky; brother Edward C. Pavlosky; and sisters Elizabeth J. and Mary Jo Pavlosky, also of Johnstown.  Bob was raised in Johnstown, graduated Greater Johnstown High School in 1960 and married the late Patricia A. (Zagrodnick) Pavlosky in 1965. Bob and Pat were married for 27 years -- a union dissolved by Pat's death in 1992. Bob was a gifted draftsman for over 48 years including almost 20 years of service at the Johnstown Works of U.S. Steel. Bob was also known as a talented craftsman who loved working with wood and leather and creating original pieces for family and friends. More importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and respected friend whose dedication to family, unique sense of humor and wisdom will be irreplaceable and very much missed.

85, of Johnstown, died June 21, 2008 at Windber Regional Hospice. Born March 6, 1923 in Johnstown, daughter of John R. and Rose (Cancilla) Bifano.  Preceded in death by parents and husband Francis J. "Jack" Reiser who died August 6, 1995.  Survived by son William married to Lori DeRemer, West Virginia; and grandchildren Victoria and Alexander. Also survived by brother Daniel Bifano, West Virginia and companion Richard Crowley of Johnstown.  Josephine was formerly employed by Penelec, she retired as a secretary from MetLife. Mauro, Joseph Angelo "Dee", 78, Johnstown, passed away June 20, 2008 at home, surrounded by his family. Born June 1, 1930 in Johnstown. Son of the late Michaelangelo and Marianna (Scaletta) Mauro. Preceded in death by parents. Survived by his wife, the former Lucille Kush to whom he was married for 49 years; and his children: Michelle, Michael, Matthew, all of Johnstown; and Marianna, wife of Mark Calabrese, Pittsburgh; also grandson Joseph Mauro, Coraopolis. Brother of Philip, married to the former Clara Sloan; Josephine (June), widow of Leonard Arena; and Mary, widow of Ronald Wentz, all of Johnstown. Also survived by his Aunt, Anne Scaletta, Johnstown. Joe's pride and joy was his garden and property. He spent his days maintaining the natural beauty of the area, which was a place he truly loved. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend. He was an exceptionally wonderful family man and was always there for his children, or anyone who needed a helping hand. Joe acquired the nickname "Dee" from his youngest daughter, Marianna, who as a baby, could not say "Daddy". From then on, he was affectionately referred to as "Dee" by many who knew him. Veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the early 1950's in the Mediterranean. During that time, he was able to visit his relatives in Sicily. Later he was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation for over 30 years, where he retired as an open hearth crane repairman in the electrical department. Joe will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him: family, friends, neighbors, and especially his constant canine companions, Sophie and Princess.

Trofino, Ruth E. (Chalich) , 93, Naples, FL., formerly of Woodvale passed away peacefully at her home on June 18, 2008. Born January 4, 1915 in Johnstown. Preceded in death by parents Milka and Peter Chalich, husband of 54 years Edward P. Trofino, and brothers Nicholas, Alexander, and Milos Chalich.  Survived by son Edwin A. married to Mary (Verrone), Johnstown, PA, and daughter Diane C. Trofino with whom she resided in Naples, FL. Also survived by four loving grandchildren, Lisa (Trofino) wife of Joseph McDaniel, Lake Tahoe, CA; Edwin A. Survived by daughters Bridget married to Bill McClarren for 43 years, Rita married to Charles Knoll, Maria married to Alvin Hritz, and Rebecca Santoyo, all of Florida; Lupe Santoyo, Virginia Beach, VA; Sara wife of the late Joseph Burgo, Johnstown; sons Nicholas Santoyo married to Cesa, Johnstown; Jesus J. Santoyo married to Rebecca; Alex Santoyo married to Deborah, Valparaiso, IN; and Joseph Ojeda, Johnstown. Reighard, Lawrence, 64, of McKinley Avenue, died June 2, 2008. Born May 22, 1944 in Johnstown. Son of Kenneth Daniel, Sr. and Faye Minnie (Jenkins) Reighard.  Preceded in death by parents; and brothers Kenneth Daniel, Jr., George William, and Jack Chester.  Survived by sons Brian, married to Debbie (Clark), Jeff, married to Lisa (Caddy), Paul, married to Michelle (Sheedy), and Steven, married to Trudy (Uzelac), all of Johnstown. Born in Johnstown on August 6, 1927, the son of the late Salvatore and Maria (Calabria) Medile.  Preceded in death by parents, brother Joseph Medile, and sisters Sara Berdine, Theresa Pullin, and Rose Mitchell.  Survived by daughter Kathleen married to Gregory Kalidonis, McMurray, PA, son Samuel married to Gemma (Lueje), Severna Park, MD, and sisters Antoinette Foster, Johnstown and Carmella Folan, Las Vegas, and sister-in-law Margaret Medile, Johnstown. Also survived by grandchildren Peter married to Stacey (Trisket), Sara and Adam Kalidonis, and Samantha, Andrew, and Dominic Medile; and friend Irene Bistransky.  Graduated from Johnstown High School, 1946. Served in the U.S. Army, 1946-1948, employed by Brooklyn Hospital Equipment Company, Shop Steward for Local Labor Union 910. Owned and Operated Medile's Dairy Store, Moxham. Agent for John Hancock Insurance Company. Office Manager for Pennsylvania State Workmen's Insurance Fund. Workshop Coordinator and aid for Congressman John P. Murtha. Mr. Medile was a lifelong volunteer for the Democratic Party of Cambria County, most recently in Ed Wojnaroski, Sr.'s office.

SANNA, Mario G., 87, of Woodmont died May 9, 2008 at home. Born March 2, 1921 in Johnstown, son of Joseph and Maria Lucia (Marcedda) Sanna. Preceded in death by parents; brothers Jeno, Tony, Frank and Sam; and sisters Elizabeth Zimmerman and Pina Punako. Survived by wife of 61 years Irene (Wasilisian); son Ronald married to Debbie; Thomas married to Patricia Zvonik; and Mary Ann married to John McGinnis. Also survived by grandchildren Franco Sanna , Kristina Bailor, Heather Sanna and brother John Sanna of Idaho and numerous nieces and nephews. Mario was a longtime member of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. He was a WWII Army Veteran, Technical Sergeant serving in the European Theater where the airplane was shot down and he became a prisoner of war for two years. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of Menoher Heights Sportsmens Club, St. Clair Tremont Club, Johnstown Sportsmens Club. A Deputy Game Warden for 10 years, and Hunter Safety Instructor for PA Game Commission for 25 years.

CLARK, M. Rita, 92, of Johnstown, died May 9, 2008, at home. Born in Johnstown, Pa., on Sept. 12, 1915, she was the daughter of John and Philomena (Boes) Pohl.   Preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mary Louise and her husband, Dr. John N. Code, brothers, Edward F. and his wife, Marceline (Little) Pohl, Robert J. and Lillian (Wilson) Pohl, and brother-in-law Henry Rengh.  Survived by her husband of 66 years, John J. Clark, children, Dennis John and his wife Mary Ellen (O'Shea) Clark of Grosse Point Farms, Mich., Mark Joseph and his wife Meio Omy (Young) Clark of Rochester, N.Y., Rev. Sean Code of Frugality, Pa., and Siobhan Marlene Code at home, and grandchildren, John Francis, Margaret Ellen, Charles Francis and Mark Augustine Clark and Mary Bridget Clark (Mrs. Matthew) Whitney.  She was a graduate of the former Johnstown Catholic High School and attended the College of St. Francis, Joliet, Ill., before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and Social Studies from Lock Haven (Pa.) State Teachers College. She also attended the University of Pittsburgh, Johnstown campus. Rita was a former school teacher at Edgewood Elementary School, in Johnstown, and later associated in business with her husband at Clark's Dairy Store in Hornerstown.  Mrs. Clark was past president of the Johnstown Catholic Forum, and a member of the League of Women Voters of Greater Johnstown, the Johnstown Community Concert Association, the Mercy Hospital Guild, the Mercy-Lee Charity Ball Committee, and a decade director of the Bishop McCort Alumni Association appeal. She served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and the Board of Directors of Senior Activity Center of Johnstown, and as Secretary of the Johnstown Parking Authority. She was elected to the Johnstown City Council and the State Legislature for the 71st District, and appointed to the Governor's Commission for Women and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.

She was a Senior Peer Counselor for St. Vincent dePaul Society, a lector and a member of the Parish Council and Mother Seton Guild of Visitation BVM Catholic Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 12, at 2 pm, Rev. Sean Code, celebrant. Friends will be received from 2 to 8 pm on Sunday, May 11, at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown.  Interment at Grandview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vistiation Catholic Church or to Bishop McCort High School.
 

 

KAUSE, Gary Paul "Fuzzy", 55, went home to be with our Lord May 7, 2008 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Fuz was born November 24, 1952 in Altoona, PA son of Sara (Holiday) Kause and the late Russell Kause. Survived by wife, the former Kathy Fisher. Brother Joseph Kause and wife Theresa, father-in-law George Fisher and these children, Brian, Paul and wife Lucritia, Kelly wife of Robert Griffith, Russell J. and wife Robyn, Jennifer wife of Chad Gyorke. He is also survived by his grandchildren whom he adored.  He was a loving brother, nephew, uncle and cousin, with whom he shared a special bond. Fuz was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed by D.R.S Laurel Technologies . He also was the owner of GPK Enterprises, a gifted carpenter who took great pride in his work.  Current Treasurer of the Johnstown Chiefs Fan Club, and a life long supporter of the Johnstown Chiefs. At every game you would find him selling 50/50 tickets.  A lifetime member of Scalp Level Fire Department where he served as past treasurer. He was a gentle man with a huge heart, always one to help in time of need. A loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was loved by all who knew him and will be forever missed.

Born in Listie, PA on April 20, 1919, the son of John Sr. and Josephine (Sedei) Aust.  Preceded in death by parents, brothers John, William and Arthur Aust, and sisters Elizabeth, Hildegarde and Anna Miller.  Survived by wife of 65 years, Eleanor (Snyder), children Herbert S. married to Donna J. Grabowski, Menoher Heights; and Robin married to William Bogler, Lewisburg, PA. Also survived by grandchildren Pamela, married to Michael Crooks, Cynthia Aust, Herbert S. POLLINO, Frances Florence (Meo), 88, died May 3, 2008, in Madison Heights, MI. Born October 11, 1919, in Johnstown, daughter of Peter and Domenica (Petroni) Meo. Preceded in death by parents, husband Cosimo "Cozy" who died in 1994, sisters Fortunata (Carpenter) Meo and Pietrina "Rose" Clark, and brothers Joseph and Charles Meo.  Survived by children Aggie married to Tom McComb, and Peter Pollino; grandchildren Brian Leticia and Michael McComb; great-grandchildren Jasmine and Lorenzo; and many adoring nieces and nephews.  Frances was a loving mother, beloved wife, and proud grandmother.  She was affiliated with St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church where funeral service will be held 1:00 PM, Thursday, May 8, Rev. Stephens, Mary Ann (Venetico), 90, formerly of Roxbury, died May 2, 2008, at LaurelWood. Born September 14, 1917, in Johnstown the daughter of James and Mary (Pompanella) Venetico.  Preceded in death by parents, husband James A. Stephens (1982); granddaughter Jamie Stephens; daughter Carol A. (Stephens) Bischof; and sister Rose Venetico.

Survived by children Rose married to Richard Hirsch, Johnstown; James married to Catherine (Topscher) Stephens, Johnstown; and John married to Mary (Canary), Johnstown; and these grandchildren: Richard Hirsch, Pittsburgh; Matthew Hirsch married to Traci (Moraca), Johnstown; Brian Bischof married to Missy (Trinh), Pittsburgh; Erin Bischof, Florida; Shannon Stephens and Sean Stephens, both of Johnstown; and great-grandson Braden Hirsch. Also survived by sister Helene Pollino, Johnstown; and nieces Katherine Hogan and Mary Wargo; and nephews Patrick and James Pollino.

Mary was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Mother Seton Guild, and a St. Vincent DePaul Volunteer for 24 years.

She was a member of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Johnstown, since 1955, where funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, with Rev. Barry J. Baroni officiating. HAINES--Margaret B., 78, of Westmont, died May 1, 2008 at home. Born May 3, 1929 in Powhatan Point, OH. Daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Baranich) Belenin.  Preceded in death by husband George G. Haines, who died on Sept. 16, 2001, grandson David J. Haines, and sister Betty Rice.  Survived by children, George, Houston, TX; Geoffrey, TN; Gregory, married to Susan (Burruss), Mechanicsburg, PA; and Pamela married to Michael Lovell, Manheim, PA; grandson, Alexander Matthew Haines, sister MaryAnn Detgen, OH, and stepfather, Ernest Horvath, OH.

Board member and former President of Allied Artists of Johnstown. She helped create the Allied Artist Scholarship Fund. She was a member and past president of the Johnstown Area Arts Council. Member and past recording secretary of the Quota Club, and former member of the Westmont Zoning Board. Margaret was a member and former Deacon of Westmont Presbyterian Church.

Reiser, Leona M., 92, died April 21, 2008 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Born in Johnstown, PA on March 15, 1916, the daughter of the late William J. and Mary (Vogel) Reiser. Preceded in death by parents; brothers, William and Francis; sisters, Mary Louise, Rebecca, and Alberta Knoll.
Survived by nephews John Knoll and wife Kathy, William Reiser and wife Lori and niece Mary Ellen Gannon and husband Richard; and grandnephews and nieces Rick and Bill Gannon; and Alex and Victoria Reiser ; and Great grandnephew and niece Laney and Bryce Gannon. Also sister-in-law Josephine Reiser.  Leona was a retired payroll supervisor of GPU-Penelec.

Andolina, Edward "Jumbo", 73, of Cairnbrook, died April 21, 2008 at home. Born in Johnstown on February 19, 1935, son of Michael and Angeline (Polonia) Andolina. Preceded in death by parents and brother-in-law Raymond Mirto.
Survived by wife Carol (Klonisky); daughter Kim, married to Bruce Brewer, Cairnbrook; and son David, married to Melanie (Mock), Cairnbrook. DiGUARDI--JOSEPH, 97, died April 20, 2008 at Atrium Manor in Johnstown.  Born February 26, 1911 in Johnstown PA, son of Mariano and Catherine (D'Anna) DiGuardi.  Preceded in death by parents, brother, Anthony and sister, Sara Torina.  Survived by brother, Samuel, married to the former Betty Billick. Also, several loving nieces and nephews.  Army Corporal during WWII having served with the 32nd Ordinance Co. during the Northern European Invasion.  He was recipient of 5 battle stars.  Retired rigger from Bethelem Steel Corp. with 40 years service.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved working in his vegetable garden.  In his younger years he enjoyed oil painting.

Todaro, Joan M. (Ciaravella), 70, of Michigan, formerly of Johnstown, died April 19, 2008.  Born September 20, 1937, the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna (Sunseri).  She is survived by her loving husband, Salvatore; sisters Vivian, married to Robert Callahan; Marian, married to Melvin Simmons; Rosann, married to Warren "Jack" Furry; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great- nieces and nephews, and loving friends.  Joan was formerly employed at Penn Traffic Company, Johnstown.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Milford, Michigan, Tuesday, April 22 at 11 AM with Fr. Ron Anderson celebrant. Medsger, Alice Jean, 90, died April 9, 2008 at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown. Born April 10, 1917, in New Florence, the daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Hothom) Wilson.  Preceded in death by husband, Richard J. Medsger, brothers, Robert and Herbert Wilson; sister Blanche Burdis.  Survived by daughter, Betty Louise Medsger, and John T. Racanelli, both of New York; brothers, Francis C. Wilson, Johnstown, and William J. Wilson, Beaver Pa., and Brother-in-law Joseph Burdis, Sr., Maryland, and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was a retired Insurance Agent at Nationwide, also worked for the Census Bureau. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in New Florence for 72 years, and lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Johnstown Chapter 183. Current member of Westmont Church of the Brethren.

KOCHER, Walter, 88, of Johnstown, died April 1, 2008 in Indiana County. He was born in Johnstown on March 20, 1920. Son of the late John and Anne (Leszega) Kocher. He was preceded in death by beloved wife Helen (Nicharot), grandson Stephen Sandor, greatgrandson Kevin Scheeser and brothers Joseph and Michael Kocher.  Survived by daughter Elaine, married to Robert Sandor, Marion Center, son Walter F., married to Julie (Dobish), Greenville, SC; and brother John of Johnstown. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  Walter served as Sgt., U.S. Army during W.W. II. He played Quarterback at Johnstown High School, class of 1938 and the Johnstown Clippers Semi Pro Team. He was a retired machinist from Bethlehem Steel. Singer-Irene, E. 89 died March 31, 2008 at the Alegheny Luthern Home. Born June 21, 1918 in Johnstown. Daughter of John and Julia Kukovitz. Preceded in death, by parents, husband, Edgar A. Singer who died in 1975, infant son David, sister Lillian Sheehe and husband Joseph, and son-in-law Rudy Zucco.  Survived by daughter, Karen Zucco; grandchildren, Laurie, married to Mark Pedry, Herndon, VA, Randy, Johnstown, Lisa married to William Peduzzi, Seven Fields, PA. Her greatest joy was her great grandchildren, Jourdan, Sydney, and Garrett Britton, Erin, Jenna, Brittany,and Adam Zucco and Alexa and Anthony Peduzzi.  A 1935 graduate of the former Johnstown Catholic High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Attended Rusk Institute at New York University in 1962. Past president and member of the Mercy Hospital Guild. A volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Mercy-Lee Charity Ball Committee and the American Red Cross, where she was instructor of home nursing in 1942. She was a member of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Singer retired from Vocational Rehabiliation Center in 1976 where she was Assistant Chief Nurse- Instructor and Coordinator of Nursing Education.  Family and friends will meet at St. Clement's Catholic Church, where funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday April 2, 2008, Fr. Speziale--Maria, 86,  of Johnstown, passed away March 25, 2008 at Speciality Select Hospital.  Maria was born in Braidi, Italy on December 8, 1921, the daughter of the late Andrea and Antonina (Longo) Arlotta.

Preceded in death by parents, husband of 40 years, Sam Speziale; sisters, Providenza and Carmela Arlotta; brother-in-laws, Tony Speziale, married to Giovanna and Vito Speziale, married to Erina; sister-in-law Benedetta, married to Phillip Bartolomeo.  Survived by niece Grazia Giuffre, Cantania, Italy; cousin Sylvia Arlotta, Hershey, PA, Sisters-in-law, Giovanna Speziale, Erina Speziale, Rosa married to Salvatore Padorno, Maria married to Rosario Dispenza, Connie married to Joseph Citrano and brother-in-law Michael Speziale married to Katherine.  She volunteered with her husband, Sam, when he was teaching language at the Johnstown Senior Center before his passing. Also survived by sisters,Barbara A. Grandinetti and husband Albert, Beth Will-Lehman, and husband David Lehman, brothers, Timothy and wife Cynthia (Schroyer), and Steven and wife Nancy (Grasser), mother in law, Grace Ferrier, sisters in law, Holly Ferrier and Michele Heyford, brother in law, Bruce Ferrier, nephews, Travis J. and Timothy T. McCaffrey--Mary M., 99, of Westmont, died March 22, 2008, at Good Samaritan Nursing Care Center. Born February 24, 1909 in Johnstown, PA, daughter of Joseph Reiser and Margaret (Haberkorn). 

Preceded in death by parents, husband, James E. McCaffrey, Sr.; son, Joseph, and infant son and son in law Edwin Kesslak.  Survived by daughters, Mary Patricia Kesslak, Kathleen Greenlee; son, James E. McCaffrey, Jr., married to Deborah (Kist), grandchildren Anthony, James Patrick, Edwin, Joseph, and Chris Kesslak, James E. McCaffrey III, Mary Jennifer Heider Jodi Briggs, Meg Burmester and Thomas Greenlee. and Joseph McCaffrey. 18 Great Grandchildren.  She was a loving mother, grandmother and Mother-in-law. Mary was past president and very active in the Mercy Hospital Guild. Long time member of Sunnehanna Country Club. She loved traveling around the world with her late husband. Rovida-- Evelyn, 99, born January 13th, 1909 in Johnstown, PA. Passed on March 23rd, 2008 Easter Sunday at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital.  Formerly of Upper Yoder and Old Conemaugh Boro. 

Preceded in death by: Husband Guy Thomas Rovida, who died in 1973; parents Alphonse and Philomena (Aceti) Aroney; brothers Anthony, Humbert, Michael, Ernest, and Joseph Aroney and sister Mary Pasa.  Survived by; son Joseph married to the former LaVerne Havel, Naples, Florida; daughter Concetta widow of Thomas Bonk. Grandchildren: Lynn Rovida married to Gerard Memet, Paris, France; David Bonk married to Sharon McCrae and great grandson Andre, Pennington, New Jersey; and grandson Donald Bonk, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Went home to be with The Lord on Monday, March 24, 2008.  Born on February 27, 1908, in Dover, Georgia, daughter of Elvira Reed Wright and married to Silas W. Wright.  She was the last of 13 siblings. 

Preceded in death by her husband, Henry Hamp Glover, Sr.; son, Henry Jr., (Ricky); David (Buck) and daughter, Freddie Mae Johnson.  Survived by daughter, Delores A., married to Rev. Julius C. Porcher, Jr.; son, Hardy (Jiffy) married to Carole Smith.  Grandchildren, Lori A. Porcher; David C. Porcher; married to Janiece; David T. Glover; Lamar Porcher married to Jamie; Jessica, married to Martin Boswell; and Quenteen Robinson married to Stephanie.  Great grandchildren, David James and Jerrin Porcher, a Host of other Great, and great great grandchildren.  Close nephews Robert and Herbert White.  Along with a host of lovable nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Close to heart, Robert L. Muscardelli, Gregory Clark, 53, of Johnstown, died peacefully in his sleep at home after a long illness on March 22, 2008. Born October 7, 1954 in Johnstown, son of the late Danny A. and Viola M. (Clark) Muscardelli.

Preceded in death by parents, brother, Gabriel Muscardelli of Florida and his beloved son, Gregory Thomas Muscardelli.  Survived by loving wife, Linda (Abele) of Johnstown; daughters, Danielle M. Muscardelli of Brockway, Lindsay A. Isamoyer of Wilkes-Barre, PA, Caroline R. Palumbo of Falls Creek, PA. Also, Grandchilden, Saige M. Runyan, Cianna R. Isamoyer, Benjamin M. Isamoyer and Sophia R. Palumbo.  Gregory worked in the car business for 28 years and was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and enjoyed the outdoors.
