Thomas Mowry Obituary

Thomas Mowry, 92, of Westmont passed away on March 2, 2024. He was born on December 31, 1931 in New Baltimore, PA.

He was the son of the late Myron J. Mowry and Kathleen E. (Fochtman) Mowry-Marshall and stepfather Norbert J. Marshall. Survived by beloved family, wife of 69 years, Lois (Akers), son Thomas F. of Naples, FL, daughter Susan M. Stager-Hrbal (Joseph), of Johnstown, granddaughters Deora (Mowry) Levy (Robbie) of Orange, CA,  Kristen (Hohing) Donati (Joey) of McDonald, PA and great grandchildren Sienna, Wesley, and Landon Levy. Also survived by his sister, Anna Percinsky (George).

Mr. Mowry attended a one-room schoolhouse, in New Baltimore, for 7.5 years prior to moving to Johnstown. He graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School in 1950. Mr. Mowry was an Army first sergeant serving as a tank platoon leader during the Korean conflict. In 1956 he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. In 1969, he graduated from the Public Utility Executive Program of the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration. Mr. Mowry was employed by Penelec for 33 years, and retired in 1990 as the Vice President and Comptroller, at the age of 58. He also served two terms as the Occupational Tax Assessor for Westmont Borough. After his retirement, Mr. Mowry worked for the Commonwealth of PA Civil Service Commission as a Proctor, and worked as a Substitute Teacher at various local schools until 2020.

Mr. and Mrs. Mowry were members of Our Mother of Sorrows Parish since 1956. They spent nearly 40 years traveling to Naples, FL during the winter months. Tom’s fondest memories were traveling with his wife and spending time with his granddaughters. Tom was an avid Pitt sports fan and took pride in his well-manicured lawn. He will be remembered for his silly jokes, colloquialisms, his smile, laughter, jovial disposition and his great knack for story telling.
