Pre-planning a funeral can be done in many ways. Vital
Statistic information is needed along with family member names, church
services, cemetery information, and personal requests.
The first step in pre-planning is to gather all information needed
pertaining to the funeral services. Monies are not needed to
pre-plan a funeral. If you prefer to pre-pay a funeral service
selected, there are two ways we suggest.
First option is to set aside funds into an irrevocable burial
trust within a banking institution. The funds should be equal to
the cost estimate of the total funeral expenses. Interest on the
account should help defer the inflationary rate. These accounts
receive interest which is taxable to the depositor.
Second option is to set aside funds into a tax-deferred
insurance annuity, appointing a beneficiary to the account. There
are no tax liabilities on these types of accounts. The beneficiary
maybe the funeral home or an appointed representative of the family.
In both cases, the accounts are set up in the name of the depositor's
social security number not the funeral home. The funeral home
becomes first payee on the account upon death.
