Dorothy Maravalli Obituary

Dorothy M. Maravalli, 86, of Westmont, passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2020. Born July, 1934 in Johnstown, daughter of Michael and Josephine (Hern) Klochak. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Labuda, parents, Michael and Josephine Klochak and brother Michael Klochak.

Survived by loving husband of 51 years, Dr. Camille Maravalli, son, Bob, and daughter, Kristie, grandchildren Abigail and Ian, great grandchildren, Dorothy and Dominic, nephew, David, brother, Richard, sisters, Marilou and Patti. Also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dorothy was born and raised in Johnstown. Following graduation from Johnstown High School in 1952, she became a certified registered nurse through the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA.  Dorothy joined the staff at Lee Hospital, where she worked in the emergency room for 15 years, and was promoted to Nursing Supervisor during her tenure. In 1972, Dorothy began her volunteer work joining the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital Jr. Auxiliary and worked on many fundraisers, as committee member or chairperson. In addition, as an avid supporter of Arts, Dorothy became active with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra (JSO) as a member of the Johnstown Symphony Auxiliary and served on the board for 11 years.  She collaborated with The Dream-Makers project, chaired the Operafest Auction, developed the “Violin Masterpieces” in which violins were painted by local artist to auction, and implemented the still successful fundraiser, "The Bach’s Lunch".  Her volunteer work extends even further to education and the church. Dorothy was an active member of the Our Mother of Sorrows Home School Association, served several terms as president and was on the Parish Council. Dorothy shared her ethnic heritage by teaching a culinary class, "Nut Roll Basics", was a member of the Community Arts Center and chaired the 13th Anniversary dinner and dance as well as contributing to other fundraisers. She also supported the Bottle Works, the Southern Allegheny Museum of Arts, and the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. As a creative outlet, Dorothy and her husband decorate their home extensively with a different Christmas theme every year.  Above all, Dorothy found her greatest joy in family and friends and relaxed by gardening, oil painting, crossword puzzles, reading, and playing bridge.
