William "Bill" Hoppel, of Johnstown, died surrounded by his family on September 2, 2019. He was born June 4, 1933 to the late Irvin and Cecilia (Krumenacker) Hoppel in Nicktown, PA.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Noel) Hoppel and three children: Cathy Gadecki (Steven), Beth Barnett (Tim), and Jim Hoppel (Kris) along with grandchildren: Alex, Chris, Eric, Kara, Matt, Jake, Paul, Anna, Annmarie, and Andy.
Mr. Hoppel served two years in the Army and graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel for 33 years and served as a member of the Cambria Somerset Authority (CSA) Board of Directors for 15 years.
Bill was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Alleghenies, Council #4604 and a parish member, lector and Eucharistic Minister at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church.
The CSA dedicated the William H. Hoppel Quemahoning Dam and Steelmaking Museum in 2016 for his service and the preservation of the Quemahoning Dam archives from the Johnstown Flood.
Bill enjoyed reading, golfing, hunting, playing cards, and traveling with friends and family.

Friends and family will be received from 6:00-8:00 PM on Friday, September 6, 2019 at the Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 AM at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. Very Rev. Mark S. Begly. Interment to follow at Grandview Cemetery.
