Bernard Michael, "Bernie" Kushnir, 92 of Westmont, passed away August 9, 2022, in Johnstown. Born December 27, 1929, in Duquesne, PA, son of Michael and Pauline (Vesonder) Kushnir. Preceded in death by his parents, son Kurt M., sister Constance Rapach and her husband Michael.
Survived by his loving wife of 68 years Joy (Hartland), son Bernard S. and wife Shay of Cheyenne, Wyoming, granddaughters Kristina, Sarah, and Katie, great-grandsons Derrick and Detroit (sons of Sarah), nephews Michael Rapach, Luke Rapach, and wife Ronna, and their three daughters Natalie, Emily, and Melanie.
Bernard was a 1947 graduate of Duquesne High School. He enlisted into the Army Air Corp in 1948 and served 4 years during the Korean Conflict. In 1952 he enrolled at Grove City College, where he and Joy met their freshman year. They were married their sophomore year. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Education in 1954 at the University of Pittsburgh. His first teaching position was at Charleroi High School. In 1956 Bernie and his family moved to Johnstown and accepted a teaching position at Greater Johnstown School District, where he taught at Garfield, and Cochran, and became Guidance Counselor at Johnstown Senior High. He earned his Master’s Degree at the Indiana University of PA.
Bernie had a witty sense of humor. He was an avid sports fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers, coached his son's little league team, and was a former volunteer for Westmont Fire Company. He taught Catechism at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, chaperoned junior high dances, and attended his son's sporting events. Bernie loved working outdoors and took great pride in his yard.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, family, students, and friends.
He is a member of St. Clement Church where a Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at 11:00 AM, Fr. William Rosenbaum. Interment at Grandview Cemetery.
