Charles A. Getty, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, passed away on March 14, 2026. He was born in Johnstown on July 3, 1939, the son of the late Charles H. Getty and Julia D. Getty. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Getty.
He is survived by his wife, Sally H. Getty; his son, Thomas S. Getty; and his daughter, Colleen Getty, wife of Jeremy Hepler. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alex, Katelyn, and Elizabeth Hepler, all of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Getty attended “Junior Pitt” and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University School of Law (Evening Division).
He enlisted in the United States Navy in August of 1961 and served four years of active duty as a line officer (ship driver) and gunnery officer aboard the aircraft carriers USS Thetis Bay and USS Wasp. He later served as the Commanding Officer of the Johnstown Navy Reserve Unit on two separate occasions and retired as a Commander in the United States Naval Reserve in 1985 after 23 years of naval service.
Mr. Getty practiced law for 15 years, serving as a public defender and Children and Youth solicitor for Cambria County. He later served as a Workers’ Compensation Judge for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 26 years.
He also served on the boards of Goodwill Industries and the Legal Aid Society and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Reserve Officers Association, the Elks, PACE, the Bachelor’s Club, and the Johnstown Seafood Club. He remained grateful throughout his life for the friendship and support of Robert V. Crites.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing or service. Private Interment at Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
