Obituary

David Ed, 97, of Johnstown, died on March 31, 2020, with one hand holding his beloved Elaine's hand, David Ed grasped onto the strong and faithful grip of Jesus and peacefully entered into his heavenly home.

Beloved by multitudes, David was known as son, brother, uncle, dad, grandpa, pap, grandpa great, precious husband, and friend. David was an encourager of souls, teacher, coach, businessman, counselor, pastor, and mentor. He served as a medic in the United States Coast Guard. A lifelong learner and educator, he taught health and coached basketball at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He enjoyed 35 years as an award winning underwriter with New York Life Insurance Company. David loved gardening, woodworking, painting, and pottery. He was a sports enthusiast, especially if his family was involved. David could often be found singing loudly, whistling while he walked, or dancing joyfully with his beautiful Nelle Elaine.

More than everything, David Ed loved Jesus Christ and was passionate about sharing that love in his heart.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Charise Diane, and his grandson, Ezra Ed.

He was well loved and will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 75 years, Nelle Elaine (Safran), his children; Michele DiGuardi and her husband John, David Michael and his wife Joy, Darryl and his wife D’arcy, Mark and his wife Cindy, Donn and his wife Amy, Norman and his wife Mary, Rebecca Sparks and her husband Greg, and Lisa Coughanour and her husband Kevin. His 23 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren will affectionately miss their grandpa’s infectious smile, perpetually welcoming bear-hug embrace, and Bible trivia questions and rewards.
