Dennis “Denny” Johns Obituary

Dennis “Denny” Wayne Johns, age of 75 years, of Cover Hill, died on April 22, 2020.

Born October 21, 1944 in Johnstown, son of Irvin Johns and Virginia (Hale) Karl. Preceded in death by his twin sons at birth, Charles and Edward Johns; mother, Virginia (Hale) Karl; stepfather, Ray Karl; father, Irvin Johns, and brothers Charles Johns and Eugene Johns. Survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Gail Johns Rovan wife of Jim; sister, Norma Keyser; and brother, Barry Johns.

Denny was a loving husband to his wife, Carol, for 54 years of marriage.  He visited Carol at Westmont Woods Nursing Home and enjoyed participating in the activities sponsored by the Activities Department including Bingo, games, music, community outings, and holiday parties. He was a loving father and enjoyed being active in his daughter Gail’s life; He was the president of Conemaugh Valley Band Boosters and “CV softball Dad” when his daughter was in high school.  He and his daughter also enjoyed fishing, taking walks, and going to restaurants together. He was a loving brother and uncle.  He enjoyed eating weekly dinners out at The Johnstown Inn and Perkins with his sister, Norma, and her family. He was a loving father-in-law to his son-in-law, Jim. He thought of Jim as a son and they enjoyed hunting together.  He also enjoyed spending time with the Rovan family; they adopted him as part of their large, wonderful family. Denny’s favorite hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking, baking, watching the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins, and taking long walks.  He was known by the nickname “Jabbers” due his passion for talking.  He tended to show affection by sharing his home cooked food, his gourmet baked goods, and handpicked berries.  He graduated from Johnstown High School.  He worked as a steel worker in the 11-inch mill of Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown.  He was a proud member of the United Steel Workers Local USWA 2632 and United Steel Workers Organization of Active Retirees, and a safety Chairman for Bethlehem Steel. He shared his amazing cooking skills with the community when he was employed at Bob Evans and Ponderosa after his retirement from Bethlehem Steel.
