Dr. George Swank Berger

January 1, 1946 ~ April 8, 2022 (age 76)

Dr. Berger passed away unexpectedly at his home in Johnstown on April 8, 2022.

Born on January 1, 1946, he grew up in Clinton, New Jersey, and graduated from Clinton Public School and North Hunterdon Regional High School.  He next obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and a Master’s of Science and Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Davis (UCD).  While living in Davis and attending UCD, Dr. Berger also worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento, California.

After getting his Ph.D., Dr. Berger taught economics at universities in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Pennsylvania.  At the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (Pennsylvania) Dr. Berger was an associate professor of economics and had recently retired from the position of department chair.  Dr. Berger was an easy going, multifaceted person who was well liked by his students. His philosophy of economics and life is best summed up by the advice he gave his students at the end of each semester: Live long and prosper.

Dr. Berger is survived by his wife, Cherri Berger of Johnstown, and his brother, Dr. Robert Berger of Livermore, California.
