Dr. Herbert V. Allen, Jr., M.D., age 94, of Richland Township, passed away peacefully at home on November 17, 2025. A loving and devoted husband, father, and Pappy, he will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
Born November 5, 1931, in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Herbert V. Allen, Sr. and Dorothy (Baker) Allen. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Margaret “Margie” or “Joyce”; and by sisters Marjorie Allen, Charlotte Darby, Dorothy Folk, Elaine Kifer, and Janice Allen. Also preceded in death by his cherished fur baby, Beanie, who was a loyal companion.
Survived by his children: Jeffrey Allen (Jan), Johnstown, Pa, Kimberly Riek (Butch), Johnstown, Pa, and Susan Hambright (Rick), Frisco, Tx; his Grandchildren: Stephanie Hill, Pittsburgh, Pa, Sean Riek (Shyheim), Pittsburgh, Pa, Katie Bazan (Ian) Austin, Tx, Julia Ward (Matthew) Plano, Tx, Nathan Hambright, Frisco, Tx, Gloria Miller (Matt) Sidman, Pa, and Michael Hockins, Johnstown, Pa; and his Great-grandchildren: Elaina Hill, Pittsburgh, Pa, Christopher Ward, Plano, Tx, and Theo Miller, Sidman, Pa. Also survived by his beloved cat, Pumpkin.
Dr. Allen was a 1949 graduate of Johnstown High School. He attended UPJ for three years before completing his pre-medical studies at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1953. He earned his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1957.
He completed his internship at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital (1957–1958), where he met his beloved Margie, a registered nurse. They married in May 1958. He served in the United States Air Force Medical Corps from 1959 to 1961 at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California.
Upon returning to Pennsylvania, Dr. Allen entered private practice in Geistown and served on the medical staff of Memorial Medical Center and the former Good Samaritan, Mercy, and Lee Hospitals for over 32 years.
He was a dedicated member of Oakland Church. Earlier in life, he worked at his father’s grocery store in Dale. A lifelong learner and thinker, he was also a devoted bridge player, tennis enthusiast, gardener, Steelers fan, and birdwatcher. In retirement, he embraced grocery shopping, cooking, and long walks with Margie.
Dr. Allen lived a life of faith, service, and love. He was deeply devoted to his family, friends, and patients, and he practiced medicine with compassion, humility, and integrity. He touched countless lives and will be remembered for his gentle heart, sharp mind, and kind spirit.
He received Jesus Christ as the Savior of his soul and Lord of his life. He now stands in the presence of the One who wipes away all tears.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to 365 Hospice, Mary Ann Ramires and Gloria Miller, for their dedicated care since December 2024. We are especially grateful for the unwavering love, presence, and support of all the family members and caregivers who helped care for him during his final months. Your kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.
In accordance with Dr. Allen’s wishes, there will be no public viewing. A celebration of life will be held 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 22 at Oakland Church, 1504 Bedford St., Johnstown, PA 15902. Pastor Jeremy Barkley will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oakland Church or the Cambria County Humane Society, Johnstown.
