Dr. Magdi Azer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed member of the medical community, peacefully passed away on April 13, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of compassion, innovation, and kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born on October 23, 1933, in Cairo, Egypt, Magdi moved to the United States after graduating from the Cairo University School of Medicine to further his medical training and pursue a career in surgery. He completed his surgical residency in St. Louis, Missouri, and a fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Azer's illustrious career spanned decades, during which he became a cornerstone of the medical community in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, he was a pioneering cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the College of Chest Physicians, and a member of the Society of Endovascular Surgery. His groundbreaking work included performing Johnstown's first pacemaker implantation in 1970, first carotid endarterectomy and first open-heart surgery in 1974, and first balloon angioplasty in 1982. Dr. Azer's dedication to advancing medical care also led him to establish Conemaugh Hospital's vascular lab, where he served as director until 2002. During his surgical career, he served in many leadership roles on the medical staff of Conemaugh Memorial Hospital including chair of the surgery department, director of the residency program, and president of the medical staff.
Beyond his clinical achievements, Dr. Azer was a respected educator, serving as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at West Virginia University and an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at Temple University. His professional affiliations were numerous including his role as president of the Cambria County Medical Society, serving on the board of directors of Johnstown Area Regional Industries, and president of the Pennsylvania Highland Chapter of the American Heart Association. He was a driving force in establishing the Apollo Scholarship for medical students. His contributions were recognized with honors such as his induction into the Heart Hall of Fame and the Apollo Award.
Outside of medicine, Magdi found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a devoted member of the Westmont Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He was an avid golfer, a passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and a lover of music and the arts, often attending the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra concerts, and supporting many local nonprofits. His annual golf trips with friends, sailing adventures in the Caribbean, and cherished beach and ski vacations with family were among his happiest times. Dr. Azer's life was a testament to the power of generosity and warmth. Known for his quick wit and warm smile, he had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His kindness and generosity touched countless lives.
Dr. Magdi Azer leaves behind his beloved wife, Karen, and his four children Richard Azer (Robin), Michele Azer (Scott Cahoone), Melissa Azer (David Saintsing), and Christian Azer.
