Ferdinand Louis Soisson Jr., MD, 93, formerly of Johnstown, died on September 22, 2022, in Mechanicsburg PA. Born on March 11, 1929, to Fred and Marie (Holtz) Soisson on the family farm in Nicktown, PA.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 56 years Dorothy (McDermott), brother Earl, and sisters Anna Soisson and Virginia Hoover.

Survived by his 9 loving children, Andrew “Pat” (spouse Linda Ertter); Ann (spouse Douglas Wilson); Mary (spouse Richard Rice); Karen (spouse David Pratt); Michael (spouse Denise Fleming); Amy (spouse Michael McCormack); Laura (spouse Edward Gregg); Theresa (spouse Paul Russo); and Timothy (spouse Erin Boyd).  Also survived by 19 grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.  Also survived by brother William, sister Louise McCann, and twin brothers Richard and Raymond.

Fred was the oldest of 7 children and the family moved to Hastings, PA sometime in the 1930s where Fred Sr., owned and operate Hastings Bottling Works where they produced soda pop. In addition to the bottling works, the family operated a beer distributor and Fred Jr. became a driver during his teenage years, delivering beer to bars throughout Cambria and Blair counties.

Fred attended St. Vincent Scholasticate, graduating in 1947 and continuing his college education in preparation for the Catholic Seminary and priesthood. He graduated from St. Vincent College in 1951 having discerned that medicine was his true vocation and continued his education at Georgetown Medical School, where he graduated in 1955. Upon graduation, he was assigned by the Airforce to assignments in Denver, Honolulu, and Springfield, MA. He began his private practice in OB/GYN with Dr. Thomas Seifert “S&S Obstetrics” in 1963 in Johnstown, PA. Fred delivered over 15,000 babies during his career. He retired from OB practice in 1988 and finally retired from his Gynecology practice in the early 1990s. Following his retirement from medicine, Fred was elected Cambria County commissioner in 1995 and reelected in 1999 as President Commissioner.

Fred married the love of his life, Dorothy in 1954. Dorothy and Fred moved to Mechanicsburg in 2003 to be close to their children.

Dr. Soisson was active in the Knights of Columbus and was awarded the “Knights of Columbus Family of the Year in PA”, in 1984. He was a Trustee of the Foundation of the PA Medical Society and was inducted into the Cambria County Business Hall of Fame. He was also an active member of the Catholic parishes from Johnstown, Patton, and Mechanicsburg.

He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

Friends will be received from 6-8 PM Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Frank Duca Funeral Home, Westmont Chapel, 1622 Menoher Blvd. Johnstown PA 15905. Friends and family will meet for a Funeral Mass at Noon on Friday at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, Very Rev. Mark Begly. Entombment, Grandview Mausoleum.
