George left high school to join the Army and fought in WWII. After returning from the war, he and his brothers opened the "American House", a bar and grill in Old Conemaugh Boro. After that, he worked for decades with his brother Bill at "Stringent Cleaners", and later retired from the Johnstown School District, where he finally received his high school diploma in January of 2018 and was featured on local news outlets.
George was the longtime patriarch of the Stringent family, and for decades, he was the chief cook of pasta and meatballs at the family reunions. By his family, he was affectionately known as "Crabby George", a man with a hard outer shell but a warm, soft middle. George was all about the family. There was nothing he wouldn't do for his siblings or their kids. He was closest with his baby brother Jr. Whatever they were into, they usually did it together. Whether they were making homemade Italian sausage, traveling afar, or simply going to a doctor's appointments, they did it together and were always there for each other. He was a consummate bachelor and gardener. Many folks from around town and as far away as California can recall receiving containers of his homegrown "Green Tomato Salad". He was a very active, life member and former President of the Union Social Club. He was also a longtime Silver Sneaker Walker at the Galleria Mall.
George was a devout Catholic and lifelong member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish, formerly St. Anthony's in Woodvale, where a Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Fr George Gulash.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Interim Hospice and the Villa for their care and compassion for George.
