Jean Griffith Obituary

Jean C. Griffith, 101, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, entered eternal rest on April 30, 2025, at her home in Laurel View Village Davidsville, PA. Born on January 30, 1924, in Johnstown, to the late Byron K. Custer Sr. and Helen Kuehne Custer. Jean was the beloved wife of the late Paul D. Griffith and the loving mother of Paul D. Griffith (Sandy) and the late Jeffrey C. Griffith.

Jean's purpose in life was to care for and take pride in the accomplishments of others. She was a compassionate caregiver for her family, friends, and anyone who needed help. Her nursing background provided her with a strong foundation to empathize with the challenges faced by others. Jean was always thinking about and caring for others in need; always putting their needs first. While not always receiving a paycheck, Jean was always nursing.

She provided comfort and care to many, including her mother, Helen, husband, Paul, her son, Jeff, and other family members and her many friends.

If someone was not on the receiving end of her care, they probably felt her positive attitude and expression of pride in their accomplishments. Whether it was a performing a simple act of kindness or you accomplished a significant professional or educational milestone she wanted you and everyone else to know what you had accomplished.

Jean's caring nature was evident in the thousands of notes she wrote, thanking others for even the smallest acts of kindness toward her and others.  Her notes and discussions were legendary for being a morale booster.

In recent years, Jean focused on her great-grandchildren, finding joy in hearing about their experiences growing up.

Jean's educational journey began at Roxbury elementary school and continued at Johnstown High School. She attended the University of Michigan and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.

She practiced home nursing with Community Nursing Services in Johnstown and served as a public school nurse in the Greater Johnstown School District. Jean also worked as a nurse at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital in Johnstown and dedicated her time as a volunteer at the same hospital.

Jean was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where she found solace and strength in her faith.

In her free time, Jean enjoyed reading and walking. She believed that her lifetime of taking planned walks was the basis for her longevity.  She fondly remembered many of the walking companions she had over the decades.

Jean is survived by her son, Paul D. Griffith (Sandy) of Sewickley, PA, and daughter-in-law, Kari Knight-Griffith of Oil City, PA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lizabeth Ashbridge (John), Ashley Lutz (Alex), Caitlyn Griffith of Titusville, PA, Megan Miller (Bryan), of Cranberry PA, her step grandchildren, Marie Krautz of Oil City, PA and Paul Knight of San Francisco, CA, her grandchildren, Mackenzie and Rowan Lutz of Sewickley, PA, and Eva, Nayla, Owen and Haysen Miller, all of Cranberry, PA, Hadley Hinkle of Titusville PA and Stephen Krautz of Oil City, PA.  She is also survived by beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who have supported her over the years.

Jean will be missed by the many family members and friends who have supported her, particularly in recent years with appreciation to Karie Griffith, Joanie Rush and Linda Custer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on May 17, 2025 at the chapel in the Main Building at Laurel View Village, Davidsville PA.  Interment will be private.
