John D Bossler

John D. Bossler, one of the most influential figures in American geodesy over the past half century, passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 89.

Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, John graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959 and began a distinguished 26-year career with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. His exceptional talent in surveying and geodetic science led to advanced studies at The Ohio State University, where he earned both a Master of Science (1963) and a Ph.D. in Geodetic Science (1973).

Throughout his career, John combined scientific excellence with visionary leadership. Following service aboard hydrographic survey vessels and numerous technical assignments, he rose to become Director of the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) in 1980. Under his leadership, NGS completed one of the most significant geodetic modernization efforts in U.S. history—the replacement of the North American Datum of 1927 with NAD 1983, the foundation of the nation’s geospatial framework that remains in use today.

In 1983, John was promoted to Rear Admiral and appointed Director of NOAA’s Charting and Geodetic Services. He was an early champion of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and continued to contribute to the scientific literature, authoring influential papers that helped shape modern geodetic practice.

After retiring from NOAA in 1986, John joined The Ohio State University as a professor and became the founding Director of the Center for Mapping. During his 11-year tenure, he advanced practical GPS applications, spearheaded statewide mapping initiatives and helped establish key geospatial organizations in Ohio. After retiring from Ohio State in 1997, he continued consulting for ten years and co-authored three textbooks.

John was also a respected leader within the international geodetic community. A Fellow and former President of the Geodesy Section of the American Geophysical Union, he fostered global collaboration by creating research exchange programs that strengthened ties among geodesists worldwide.

Equally admired as a scientist, educator, and administrator, John possessed the rare ability to bridge technical innovation and organizational leadership. His contributions transformed the field of geodesy and left a lasting impact on the nation’s geospatial infrastructure.

John had a rich social and family life as well. While his son David was growing up, they were both active in Indian Guides, Cub Scouts, and Boy Scouts. John was the president of his local civic association and the head of the Board of Trustees at his church. He also taught Sunday School and was in charge of handyman jobs at the church.

While their main residence is in Ohio, John and his wife, Sandy, spent winters in Fort Myers, Florida, where they enjoyed many activities with their beloved friends and family over the years. He was also meticulous in his lifelong pursuit of home improvement projects.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching the PGA’s Memorial Tournament, which takes place annually in his Dublin, Ohio neighborhood. One of his greatest joys was watching the Ohio State Buckeyes football team each weekend in the fall, and he took great pride in their two most recent National Championships, in 2014 and 2024.

John was a loving, generous and well-rounded man whose warmth, quick wit, and infectious sense of humor brought joy to those around him. Never afraid to laugh—especially at himself—he made lasting impressions and cherished friendships wherever he went.

Though he leaves behind an extraordinary professional legacy, John will be remembered most for the love he shared with his family and friends. He is survived by Sandy, his beloved wife of 62 years; his son, David; his daughter-in-law, Linda; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family members who cherished his love, guidance, and friendship.
