Maylee Joan Camut Obituary

Maylee Joan (McGhee) Camut, 95, passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2026, in Frederick, MD. Born January 26, 1931 in Peterstown, WV, daughter of French and Nannie (Miller) McGhee. Preceded in death by her parents, husband of 71 years Albert J. Camut, daughter Nancee, sisters Violet Mann, Anna Kleckler, and brother Clyde McGhee and grandson William T. Camut.

Maylee (known by her family and friends as Joan) is survived by her children: Albert J. Jr., and wife Cathy Camut, of Rockville MD; Deborah and husband Duke Hoffman of Frederick, MD; and Joan and husband Matt Joyce of Chantilly, VA. Grandchildren Michael and Bryan Hoffman, Albert J. Camut, III, Marissa and James Joyce and many loving nieces and nephews.  Joan was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Joan grew up on her beloved family farm in Peterstown, West Virginia. After high school graduation, she entered the Women’s Army Corp (WAC) during the Korean War, and served as a laboratory technician at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. While there, she met the love of her life, Al Camut, who was assigned to the famed 304th Walter Reed Army Band. Joan and Al were married in 1951, had four children, and lived in Potomac, Maryland for 57 years. Joan’s family was the light of her life. She was a devoted and deeply loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Joan approached life with grace, kindness, and a strong sense of faith. From her incredible cooking to her many unforgettable dinner parties, she made it all look effortless. She always welcomed her family and friends into her home with a warm generosity and a smile. Joan was an avid reader, loved playing tennis, traveling, and gardening. She was always happiest when spending time with her family. Some of her fondest memories were bringing her children to her family farm in West Virginia, visiting her husband’s family in Johnstown, PA, and celebrating holidays and special occasions with her children and grandchildren.

Our mom Joan, made our lives so incredibly special. We will miss her beautiful smile, loving heart, and calm presence forever.

Joan was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Potomac, MD and St. Clare of Assisi Church in Johnstown, PA.
