Nancy Austin Obituary

Nancy Caldwell Austin, age 96, passed away on January 31, 2024 in Carlisle, PA. She had lived in Johnstown for over 65 years previously.

Born September 17, 1927 in Mansfield, Ohio, she was the daughter of Harold McKnight Caldwell and Celia Moore Caldwell.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of over 50 years, Charles B. Austin, and her sister Betty McFarland.

Nancy is survived by her two children, Dr. Charles B. Austin, Jr. (Jane), and William D. Austin; five grandchildren, Dr. Daniel Austin (Julianne), Dr. Matthew Austin (Katharine), John Austin (Dr. Hanna Kemeny), Ellie Austin, and Carlie Austin, as well as her brother Harold Caldwell (Ann).

She had seven great-grandchildren, three nieces, and three nephews.

As a child, Nancy lived in several cities due to her father's position with the YMCA. After graduating from Bradford High School, she attended West Chester State Teacher's College, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Health with a minor in English in 1949. After College, she moved to Johnstown to become the Health Education Director at the YWCA. Later, Nancy was the Physical Education teacher at Westmont Hilltop Junior High School for many years. In addition to teaching, she coached the Junior High Woman's basketball team. She was an active member of Westmont Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon.

In her younger years, Nancy loved golf, tennis, skiing, bowling, and sailing at Prince Gallitzin State Park. She enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, and was an avid reader. She was a great piano player who could play almost any song by ear. She and her husband Charlie were long-time members of the Ski Patrol at Laurel Mountain. She appreciated all sports, and was especially devoted to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates her entire life. There may not have been a more dedicated Pirates fan!

Nancy, known affectionately as "Cub", will be greatly missed by all of her family.

A Memorial Service will be held in Johnstown in the spring.
