Peter J. Vizza

Peter J. Vizza, 68, Johnstown, passed into eternal rest on February 13, 2025 at Doylestown Hospital surrounded by his loving family.  Born June 1,1956 in Johnstown.

Preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Teresa Vizza, brother John, and his former wife, Lynn Ann Taylor. Survived by his loving brothers Vince, married to Karen (Twardziak), Paul, married to Cindy (Popchak), and Kathy (Sipes) Vizza, sister-in-law. Lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews: Matthew, Michael, Emily, Paul Jr., Margery, Philip, Joseph, and Kayla, as well as grandnieces and grandnephews. He will be missed by many cousins, friends and colleagues.

Peter was a long-time staff photographer for The Tribune-Democrat (1976-2005). During his time at the newspaper, he served as President of the Johnstown Typographical Union, Local 137 of the Communication Workers of America, 14815. Peter was a dedicated public servant in the Johnstown community. He served at Johnstown High School, where he was a counselor in the “After School Live Program,” helping students to further their education and find their career paths after graduation. Peter served as Deputy Mayor for the city of Johnstown 2014-2017 and was appointed to the district’s school board in 2020. He was a member of both the Johnstown City Council and the Johnstown Planning Commission.

Peter was a 1974 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School, where he swam on the varsity swim team. He was a member of the Johnstown YMCA Leader Corps, member and Treasurer of the Union Social Club and a parishioner of St. John Gualbert Cathedral, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated on February 22 at 11:00 AM.

Friends will be received at St. John’s prior to the funeral Mass, beginning at 10:00 AM.
