Robert Leo "Bob" Markferding, 94, Murrysville, PA., died on June 17, 2024. Born October 21, 1929, in Johnstown, son of the late Leo and Agnes (Rosage) Markferding.
Preceded in death by parents, sisters Mary Grace Griffith, Ruth Heffley, Sarah Mosorjak and Dorothy Murphy.
Bob attended the University of Pittsburgh where he earned an electrical engineering degree. He worked for the United States Steel Corp. at Homestead with several overseas assignments.
He was employed by Conemaugh and Blacklick RR as a machinist. He enlisted in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict as a specialist in radar in the 92nd A & E Squadron. He flew the atom bomb out of Alaska in the B-36 with a crew of 16 – the largest bomber every built.
He was severely injured in a head on car crash which left him hospitalized with legs and back injuries. He had many hobbies including wood carving and video camera recording. He traveled extensively, visiting 40 states, Europe, and Asia. Our Uncle was loved by all his nieces and nephews. He was a member of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh and Our Mother of Sorrows in Johnstown.
A viewing will be held at the church beginning at 9:30 am on Friday, June 28, 2024 with Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 AM at Our Mother of Sorrows. Very Rev. Mark Begly. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Bishop McCort High School or St. Vincent de Paul Society.
