Virginia Kaczmarek Obituary

Virginia A. Kaczmarek, 81, formerly of Southwest Greensburg, went to be with the Lord on Thursday December 19, 2024.

She was born May 13, 1943 —in “the last century” as she liked to say— in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania to the late Wit M. “Buck” and Laura (Reboy) Kaczmarek. Preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Stanley “Stush” Piesetzkie. She is survived by her son Corey Kaczmarek and his fiancé Lori, grandson Caden Kaczmarek and his sister Brooklyn, her sister Frances Piesetzkie, niece Jennifer Moore (William, Lillian, Charlie) and nephew Vince (Andrea, London) Piesetzkie.

Virginia was a 1969 graduate of Regis Women’s College of Weston, Massachusetts with a Baccalaureatus Artium (Bachelor in Arts) in English literature. Upon graduation, she joined a missionary group, the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, whose mission was to serve the poorest of women and children in foreign countries. She took her vows in the organization as Sister Mary Modesta Kaczmarek and was assigned to work in Lima, Peru. After fulfilling her calling she returned to the United States and became a Disability Claims Adjudicator for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania which she retired from after 29 years of service.

For those who knew Ginny they know how much she loved to travel and explore the world with her friends and family. Her trips to Ireland and Italy, along with cross country adventures were highlights of her retirement. Ginny’s ever-present curiosity led to overflowing bookshelves and conversations with strangers. She loved literature and the arts. Her passion for history took her to many historical landmarks—much to the chagrin of her son when he was a boy. Ginny delighted in being “Grammy”, hiding under the dining room table as her grandson and his sister went on bear hunts about the living room. Ginny had a quick sense of humor and an eye for simple beauty, often pointing out wildflowers growing along the roadside. “That’s pretty,” she would say. Her interests ranged from complex topics like geopolitical issues to simple pleasures such as a cold Guinness at the end of a day.

Ginny spent countless hours volunteering at her church, with the Red Cross, and at The Palace Theater in Greensburg. She was a kind, outgoing, generous woman who would do anything for anyone at any time. She was adored by many with a heart (and a filling—she liked to point that out) of gold. She will be greatly missed by many, but many will feel blessed for the opportunity to have met her and to have spent time with her. Special thanks to her personal caregivers and Windber Hospice. Ginny, we love you and will always miss you, but you are now at peace.

Family and friends will be received from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM Friday, December 27, 2024 at Frank Duca Funeral Home, East Hills Chapel & Crematory, 404 Walters Avenue, Johnstown, PA 15904. A Memorial service to follow at 1:00 PM.
